People's Alliance against Govt Hiring French Lawyers

The People's Alliance for Democracy warns the government against its planned employment of French lawyers in its legal battle with Cambodia in the International Court of Justice.

The group claims that hiring French lawyers will put the country at a disadvantage and cause Thailand to lose sovereignty over the disputed border area.

People's Alliance for Democracy's spokesman Parnthep Puaponngpan said the 2000 memorandum of understanding, or MOU, cannot prevent border clashes as suggested by the prime minister.

He added that the government's indifference to Cambodia's occupation of Thai territory is the cause of the current round of confrontation.

Parnthep suggested the MOU allows Cambodia's invasion of Thai soil.

He stated that the International Court of Justice's, or ICJ, proceeding of the matter does not guarantee that the dispute will end.

Parnthep went on to say the government's closure of evacuation centers was merely a political ploy while it ignored the presence of Cambodian troops in various areas waiting for an opportunity to strike.

The PAD spokesman condemned Cambodia for violating the ceasefire agreement and faulted the Thai government for allowing evacuees to return home although the situation is still volatile.

He cautioned the government against its planned employment of French lawyers for a legal fight with Cambodia in the ICJ and claimed it will cause Thailand to lose more territory as the map which is at the center of the border conflict was actually drawn by France.

Parnthep said the government should not trust that French lawyers will adhere to professional ethics and ignore their country's interests in Cambodia.

If the legal battle is inevitable, Parnthep recommended that international law expert Sompong Sujaritkul for the task.

Meanwhile, PAD coordinator Prapan Khoonmee said the Thai military has failed to protect the country's sovereignty despite its superior military might to Cambodia.

Prapan said Cambodia's occupation of Thai territory also stems from the army's ignorance to carry out its duty.

Aha, but then at least if the French law firm didn't carry out its job properly the government could have a chance to win one case associated with the whole mess by suing their lawyers.

I hope a french lawyer sues him for defamation.

Having read this, I'm beginning to think that some members of the PAD are on crack. The only reason they object here is because the french lawyers are french. And to this bunch of xenophobic zealots that is simply unacceptable. If the lawyers, were Germany, Dutch, British, American etc. they''d still use the same excuses / accusations against the government. PAD grow up and embrace the world.

PAD has guaranteed that the Govt will hire French lawyers. I have no doubt that they will do a proper and professional job.

The worst thing that could happen in the eyes of PAD would indeed be a settlement of the case. That would probably rob the PAD of its very foundation and reason to exist. So I expect PAD to oppose all and any step towards normalization and peace.

If the government is hiring Jacques Verges, Thailand will win its cause... without any doubt. !

After reading his credentials I would believe Jacques Verges is rather the kind of lawyer Thaksin would need. Or perhaps Osama bin Laden ... oops! Too late for the latter.

I've dealt with French lawyers, and Thai lawyers in about equal numbers.

The French Avocats clearly win the talent competition hands down.

Et Oui, Jaques Verges is perfectly cast for this endeavor.

you ought to know better right, nes' pa?

the implication was that thailand ought to hire some other nationalities than frenchie

because camb already hires french lawyers to represent their interests,

so thailand really have many other experts in international laws to choose from,

so why choose french?

but then come to think of it, most of the current ruling figures including the graduate from oxford included,

could not be in modern term, be proudly called--too intelligent for the job.

otherwise, our beloved thailand would not be in such a sorry conditions.

producing the best kind of rice in the whole wide world, but the producers and farmers are still dirt poor.

my little old heart bleeds for those poor farmers. if only i have a magic wand....

Does the PAD oppose to peace, are you sure?

animatic my friend

I wonder what the outcome would be, had you had interviewed them in Thai language?

Or better yet, have everyone you previously examined and decided each superiority, to defend a live case in a Thai court?

Wonder, if the French Avocats would still clearly win the talent competition hands up, both hands up even?

Fyi, most Thai lawyers are the worse bunch of defense lawyers in the world.

They are just not culturally inclined to be aggressive. And for those aggressive bunch, they quickly grow wings.

It is ironic that it is a French lwyer when it was the colonial problems of the French which caused the problem with the borders in the first place.

Lawyers will work for whoever pays them.

The maps were drawn by the French 100 years ago. I think they might have moved on since then. There might even be a few French people who don't agree with how the maps were drawn and the ICJ decision.
