Hey

I currently live in Koh Samui and after visiting almost all of the computer stores on the island I still cannot find a laptop charger - mine is completely broken now and so I am unable to use my laptop at all. Does anyone know where I can order a laptop charger for a Packard Bell KAV60. It seems that it is only a UK laptop and with post taking up to four weeks to arrive I would rather source one in Thailand if possible. Hope someone can help.

Thanks

If you go to www.packardbell.com the very first thing you will have to do is chose your country. Yes it seems like this brand is more popular in Europe (not just the UK) and a few countries in Middle east and in Africa. You could try to contact the service centers of those countries closer to Thailand and see if they can ship faster.

But if I were you, I would just go and check a few pawn shop selling old electronic and computer components and try to match the laptop charger (take your broken one with you). If that fails, you at least will be able to (99.9% sure) find one that has the same voltage and power output. For example my HP has 19v 90W output (or 19v and 4.74A). It has to be the same voltage or very close to it, and if it can output more than 90W (or 4.74A) in my case, it won't hurt to have a little extra but if it's a little not enough, it may not be able to handle the load. After that ask the guy working there to cut the cord off that goes from the charger into the laptop and soldier it into the "new" charger. It's a very simple operation and will only take 5-10 min, many of them have the soldier guns and tester to check the polarity, I am sure you would have to give them a little extra for their work but It won't take you a whole month to wait for a new one and will be cheaper in the end. I would have helped you to do this if I was living on Samui, but I am not there.

People who look at a circuit board like it is a Chinese manuscript may be shoked by what I said, I can assure you 19V (or 14 or 12 or anything else) power from a HP charger is the same as 19V from a ASUS charger and will not hurt anything. It's like replacing a Duracell battery with Energizer.

You can buy a universal Netbook adapter.

Example here

Try Amorn

Took me to long to type my reply, didn't see yours.

Yes it's also an easy way to go. It doesn't have to say Packard Bell on a charger.

Just make sure that universal one has the voltave and power output that will match your laptop requirements.

It matters not that it's a UK Netbook. It just has to be a 30- 40Watt Universal Netbook Adapter. Laptop adapters are rated at 65 watts.

You need a universal model because otherwise you will have to track down one for a PB Netbook, which is far more difficult. As you can see, a universal model supplies different tips to fit differing makes of netbooks.

Worst case scenario is that you can buy another Netbook adapter and to get someone to change the tip with your existing one.

Why can't you get your current adapter fixed? Are you sure that the problem is with the charger?

Here is one on eBay

Take note of the specifications:

Specifications

1) Power: 30 Watt

2) Input: 100-240V-1.7A 50-60Hz

3) Output: 19V - 1.58A

4) Plug Size: 5.5mm * 1.7mm

5) Plug Type: 3 pin (clover lead) This part is not important as you can use a local lead.

If the Packard Bell uses a generic tip, then you may be ok with a Liteon PA-1300-04.

Cheers for your replies. I've ordered one from Amazon UK after reading the Kindle thread about the speed of delivery.. I'll also check out the other options and maybe order another just incase the same problem happens again.

Thanks!

I didn't see the word NETBOOK in your previous reply. Well in this case the option of Universal adapter may not work. Nowhere the OP mentioned it is a Netbook she needs it for. Maybe it will work for majority of Netbooks and for some Laptops but saying It just has to be a 30- 40Watt Universal Netbook Adapter. Laptop adapters are rated at 65 watts. is just wrong. As I already mentioned in my first post, my adapter is 19V and 90W - way above 65 that you said. It depends on every particular laptop model, they are not all the same. And they are not all 19 V.

Cheers.

I think that you are confusing yourself.

The Packard Bell KAV60 is a Netbook.

All of the advice and suggestions I have posted are entirely correct.

My mention of 65 watts was simply to differentiate between the types of charger whilst searching online... mainly because the OP wrote Laptop in her original post.

For laptops I should have written 65 watts and over. But in this case it was unimportant as we are looking for a Netbook adapter.

Don't give the girl a heart attack. ;)

Sorry yes it is my fault and it is a netbook computer. I have ordered a new charger now and just had an email to say it is dispatched. Thanks to everyone who commented - this is a much more helpful part of the forum than others :)

I am not confusing... I can't know all the models of laptops and netbooks in the world so I didn't know it was a netbook.

I simply pointed out that your assumption that all Laptops are 65 W is wrong. Now that you corrected yourself and said 65W and over is generally true (there could be laptop models with lover power consumption - depends on laptop configuration).

And again, as I already said, not all the netbooks and laptops are 19V. My ASUS netbook is not 19V, I'm almost sure it's 12V but can't confirm as I don't have it with me right now. So when buying aftermarket charger, one need to make sure that the Volage and power output match. Not hard to check.

That's all, end of debate.

Just get any 2nd hand charger that has the correct output voltage and at least the same watts. If it has the incorrect plug for your computer just cut the lead and replace with the old lead...Thai Style.

Now you are being obtuse.

How did I know that it was a Netbook?? Is it because "I know all of the models of laptops and netbooks in the world?"

The point is that I researched it before I posted. That way was I was able to give a recommendation as to what would and would not be compatible with her machine.

You didn't bothered to check(a schoolboy error) and proceeded to get bogged down in a pointless argument with yourself.

My recommendations are specifically for the OP. I never wrote that they were suitable for every laptop or netbook.

The truth is that you didn't both to check the specification of the machine in question before posting. That is really the point.

You penultimate line is a corker. You urge people to check that the voltage and power output match in an 'aftermarket' charger, but you didn't even both to check that yourself before you posted. You are funny.

In addition to this, you neglect to mention that the plug to laptop size is also very important.

So please, there is no debate. If you want to argue that I should have written 65 watts or over for laptops that's fine...but rather pedantic. Especially since I only mentioned the higher voltage to discourage her buying such for her Netbook.

Clear now?

Good for you that you did a research! I just gave a general recomendation that is good for ANY situation with ANT type of electronic device.

If I was talking to a child, I would have specifically mentioned to check the plug and not just said try to match it. I thought for adult it would be obvoius that they would check the plug as well as the power output, apperantly it's not obvious for you so try to grow up buddy and don't be a word-nazi.

Another thing - practice your reading skills more as I did say in my first post to cut the cord off and soldier it into the "new" adapter.

Cheers!
