BAUCHI, NIGERIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least 16 people were killed after gunmen attacked a village in northern Nigeria, local media reported Saturday.

African newspaper Business Day reported that unidentified assailants burnt 20 houses in Kurum village in Bauchi state. The gunmen were able to escape after raiding the area.

The state's Commissioner of Police, John Abakasanga, said that the motive behind the attack was not known. He, however, said the attack followed one of the serial raids in successive months.

An official said that three more persons receiving treatment in the hospital died, bringing the death toll to 19.

In late April, 32 Christians were killed and 82 churches burnt in northeast Bauchi state in three days of post-election violence. Hundreds of people have been killed in the persistent sectarian violence in the state, which is located between the Muslim-dominated north and the Christian-majority south.
