Palestinian salaries unpaid following Israel's decision to freeze tax transfers

2011-05-10 01:03:45 GMT+7 (ICT)

RAMALLAH (BNO NEWS) -- The Palestinian Authority said on Monday that it was unable to pay salaries for the first time since 2007 because of Israel's decision to freeze cash transfers due to the Fatah-Hamas unity deal.

Palestine News Network reported that Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said the Palestinian Authority (PA) had paid salaries to its 150,000 employees promptly on the 5th day of every month since mid-2007.

"We are now on the 9th and we have not been able to meet this obligation," he said.

The Israeli government headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided on May 1 to hold up transfer to the PA of $90 million of tax funds and customs fees that Israel collects on the Palestinians' behalf. The transfers make up 70 percent of PA revenues.

Palestinian antagonist groups, Fatah and Hamas, signed a unity pact last week in Cairo. The two main factions, Hamas and Fatah, will begin talks to form the technocrat government, which will take responsibility to prepare for new parliamentary and presidential elections.

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to choose either peace with Israel or peace with Hamas as there "is no possibility for peace with both." Israel holds the Hamas terrorist organization solely responsible for any terrorist activity and emanating from the Gaza Strip.

let me get this right, the entire PA source of income is taxes paid by the Arabs working in Israel?

What happened to all the aid from Europe, US and the rest of the world?

Westbank has not been under any blockade or occupation for years now, what happened to developing or establishing the economy?

No, you got that wrong.

Its VAT of products sold in the occupied territories and tariff on foreign imports that passed the Israeli customs before they reach their destination in the occupied territories.

Just for the sake of the argument, will say you correct( even though you not) so tell me again where is all the aid money? and is that the only source of revenue for PA?

Are they really that corrupt and useless?and after all the years of self govern still can not get economy going? and dare to blame Israel for it? why not blame Africa as well while at it.

The aid money don't go to the budget that is used to pay the employees of the PA. TAX money is used for it. At the moment the occupier Israel holds that money back.

You are right, keep Israel out of it.

Israel should have no business in Palestine and they should leave. Finally even you understand this. Time to go home home. bye, bye!

Ok, so PA wants the money from Israel but Israel should go away???

How does that work?

And you still have not answered why no economy? And only source of income is Israel ??????

Where does the aid money go? To make rockets??

Nice. So if the Palestinians put down their weapons and unite, israel has a problem. Divide and conquer at its finest.

Yes, the occupier Israel collects the tax money and customs fees and keeps it. This tax money is normaly used to pay the PA employees.

What is there so difficult to understand. Thats how most government authorities work and pay their expenses. with tax money. The only difference is that normally not a foreign occupier collects the tax.

Aid money has nothing to do with it. And than its more an Israeli thing to get billions of dollars for military aid.

Well, this thread is going to go downhill even faster than the Bin Laden one i can see.

It seems impossible for some of you to maintain a discussion without resorting to hyperbole or inflammatory responses.

Considering that I have no desire to come back here later and suspend all of you
