JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in an effort to battle the global economic crisis agreed to cooperate on manpower management,

The agreement, which was reached at the ASEAN seminar held Monday and Tuesday at the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry in Jogjakarta, Indonesia, is also expected to help the region compete in manpower sector at a global level.

Director General of Industrial Relations and Labor Social Insurance at the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry, Myra M. Hanartani told Antara news agency that the delegates had agreed to encourage cooperation among employers, labor unions and governments to promote the living standard of workers and their families through social dialogues and based on mutual understanding and trust.

According to Hanartani, the delegates also agreed to push their countries' government to facilitate and provide good workplace, ensure legal certainty, implement codes of ethic for social partnership, and appreciate bipartite cooperation.

In addition, delegates said they would target labor management training and researches with the help of the International Labor Organization.

The announcement comes only two days after the closing of the 18th ASEAN Summit, which was held in Jakarta, Indonesia during the weekend.

Last Friday, ASEAN Economic Ministers agreed to strengthen the region's small and medium enterprises to improve the region's economic integration.
