Penang Visa Run

Featured Replies

Seasons Greetings to one and all.

All the info I have read so far re travel from Hatyai to Penang refers to mini buses with up to 10 or 12 passengers. While this may be the most economic mode of transport I rather think that, being somewhat corpulent, I would find the 4 hour journey too uncomfortable. I would appreciate any input available on a more comfortable mode of transport (taxi maybe or VIP bus) and the estimated cost.

Thanks in anticipation.

Peder

A share taxi, either by yourself, or split between two or three (not a full load) is the most comfortable mode. Cost should be about 1,000-1,500 each way by yourself (been a number of years since last trip so not positive on current price). They can be booked next door to King's Hotel (or on the sidewalk) early any morning as well as other places. They will take you directly to Consulate and pick you up the next day for return trip if this is a visa run.

Agree that the mini bus can be less than a pleasant experience.

Hi Peder,

Hi,

Another interesting way to Penang:

From Hatyai main market, take an air-con van (11passengers/45bt each)

to Danok/Bukit Kayu Hitam border. About one hour journey.

On reaching Danok (Thai) immigration...... clear Thai immigration.

Keep walking on your left..... just a short distance, you are in Malaysia.

You will be able to see a number of Malaysian air-con taxis park near by.

You have to book the whole taxi to Penang (a three hours drive, more or less).

Price I actually don't know, but it is standard and quite reasonable.

After getting into the taxi, you can ask him to take you to the Malaysian

Duty Free shopping complex, if you are interested, also nearby.

Then only after that you will proceed to the Malaysian immigration,

police and custom checkpoints. After that...... pleasant trip to Penang

via the scenic Penang Bridge or by the interesting ferry.

Have a pleasant trip.
