U.S. drone strike kills 8 in Pakistan's North Waziristan

MIRANSHAH, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- An unmanned U.S. drone on Thursday fired two missiles into a vehicle killing at least 8 people in Pakistan's tribal district of North Waziristan.

According to Ary news television, the U.S. drone fired two missiles on a vehicle in the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan. At least eight suspected militants were killed in which was the third strike since the U.S. special operation that resulted in the killing of notorious terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

On May 2, the United States successfully conducted an operation in a compound in the Pakistani city of Abbotabad where the leader of the al-Qaeda terrorist organization was residing.

The first U.S. drone strike since the controversial operation took place on May 5. At least 15 militants were killed in a hideout and a vehicle in Vatoi Village in the Datta Khel area.

Last Tuesday, U.S. drone strikes killed at least four suspected militants and injured another five people in the Baghar area of Angur Adda, located in the country's South Waziristan near the Afghan border.

Controversy has surrounded the drone strikes as local residents and officials have blamed them for killing innocent civilians and motivating young men to join the Taliban. This was the 28th drone strike in the region in this year.

In April, over 40 people were killed in U.S. drone strikes in the region, prompting thousands of Pakistanis to gather and protest against the attacks during a two-day sit-in.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said in its annual report that the U.S. drones strikes were responsible for 957 extra-legal killings in 2010. Since August 2008, there have been over 250 drone attacks that have reportedly killed more than 1,500 people in north and South Waziristan

Pakistan's Afghan border, which the United States considers to be the most dangerous place on Earth, is known to be a stronghold of the Taliban's Haqqani Network, considered one of the top terrorist organizations and threats to U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
