ManU In Decline?

city really shouldn't be that bothered about going out of the CL in all honesty, that's if they do. your priority should be the league title this season.

Totally agree Stevie. But didn't want to use the same old cliche. "We want to concentrate on the League" :D

At the point that Red says this I will admit that United are in decline.

Looking a bit shaky of late though you must admit?

How about you MrRed? biggrin.gif

I will decline to comment on this thread until February .....better bait Smokes is needed wink.gif

Ok carmine, thankfully we don't give up in november and probably why we have done so poorly over the last 20 years.

Long way to go-send us an update at the end of January.

Was just reading yesterday Arry thinks you have a shot at the league. Lol

Yes i know, he just can't keep his gob shut can he.

He'll probably be telling us when we lose a few games that it'll be a miracle if we qualified for champions league. :whistling:

He be better off spending more time with his legal council than blerting out crap to his little hareem of admiring journos. Ancellotti please.

Harry just talks total and utter garbage. However if you totally ignored what he says (which is remarkably difficult to do) he has been doing an incredibly good job of late. He really has managed to hold Spurs together during quite difficult times. And I do realize he is very lucky having a very talented squad but he is getting the best out of them.

If you consider that Harry and Levy arent probably on speaking terms, they have proven a pretty good team of late. And when Harry goes he will be leaving the team in incredibly good shape for whoever succeeds him. This thread has been pretty tough on Harry all things considered.

Errr..I meant the Spurs thread.

We've always acknowledges he's done an excellent job. Howver, fact is, we've won a number of games despite of him. He's a manager and a chirpy cockney wheeler dealer, but at the highest level is is found to be wanting. I think he'll really struggle with the England job if he gets off the charges against him. He's made some staggeringly stupid decisions this season in his substitutions and the lack of them, and some of his team set ups defy belief (the oaff put VDV on the right and didn't even sub him for Sandro when our midfield was being overun  ) and will no doubt continue in this vein but he has a very talented squad to choose from and his move for Parker and Adebayor were inspired.

Anyway, back to Man Yoo in decline because theres lots to discuss there!!!

Anyway my theory on this subject is this. I dont see much evidence of decline in Man Utd. I remember that Ferguson said at the beginning of the season that he thought United needed 84 points (compared to 80 last year) to win the title. I suspect that United will get thm it is just that City will get 94.

And the problem that Ferguson has is that City have raised the bar. There is Ferguson gradually blooding top quality youngsters into the squad like he has done in the past. City on the other hand just go out there and buy the best players available. And if one turns into a dud -say Tevez etc etc - they just go out and buy a new one. City's squad is pretty scary and to think they plan to strengthen it in January.

As I see it City's plan goes well beyond simply winning the League this year, they intend to dominate it for the foreseeable future and Mansour will provide whatever funds are necessary.

I totally agree with you, its just that i find it hilarious that the born and bred :ermm: Man Utd supporters just can't come to terms with the fact that they are not top dogs anymore and are highlt unlikely to be again for quite some time because i don't think the arab money will be running out anytime soon. What will happen is that Ferguson will take his team by the scruff of the neck and keep the rivalry approaching something respectable.

You have to admit Carmine that while you were battling City, essentially you realize it was a battle you cant win and knew you would lose. Their operating costs last year were 348m and yours were 134m.

I entirely agree with you about Man Utd supporters. They are currently in the 'we have seen this all before but at the end of the day we will come out on top'. And they refuse to recognize that City have changed all the rules.

Also I think there are two big differences between the City and Chelsea money machine. The first is that Abromavich interferes and screws things up on a regular basis. You cant achieve anything if you sack a manager every year. Mansour clearly doesnt get involved and has a professionally run business - in fact it looks to be better run each year (from quite a low base.) Secondly Abromavich seems to have a plan that involves a time horizon of about 3 months. While I get the impression that City are probably already looking past United at Barcelona. And I also suspect that their approach for United is that they intend to be so much better that they dont really try and compete.

In any case one suspects that Mansour's appetite for spending money is very large and the appetite of the Glaziers to generate losses in order to compete in terms of spend is fairly minimal. I suspect that very quickly they will resign themselves to coming second and generating profits. Essentially if the league amounts to he who spends the most wins (and if that doesnt work you spend more) it is simply a race to create losses.

And finally the threat to City is not going to come from FFP, everyone has already started ignoring that. It is the likes of PSG that has been taken over by Qatar Investment who spent 90m Euro on their squad in the summer and are after the likes of Beckham and Hazard. And PSG is being built up from a revenue base that is as small as City's was so their future losses will be terrific. Although Qatar have gone even further than Abu Dhabi. They bid up for the TV rights for the French league so boosting the entire revenue base of the league as well as their club. Sarkozy is a big fan. And with the likes of Anzhi around, City may have to start looking even beyond Barcelona.

nice to see old red nose getting a taste of his own medicine after all these years and at Old Trafford !

first the thumping by arch rivals City and now strange refereeing decisions going against them, plus the usual 8 minutes injury time not being added on.

what is the world coming to ? whistling.gifbiggrin.gif

Those cracks are turning into gaping holes.:o

Massive holes - yet again bad judgement in regards to tactics from old Fergie !

A club in crisis? The keepers a tea leaf.....Rio's more interested in american football.......Evra's a ponce.........Fergies bubous beak is shining brighter than a floodlight.....

Did you actually watch the game?

I did and thought you were crap and went with 1 striker knowing you needed a win. I believ Evra was even walking back at on epoint as Basel were on a fast counter attack. Your midfield never pressed them and gave Basel so much time on the ball. Can't recall Rooney even winning one header in the second half... And I can't recall any noticeable chances created unlike Basel who took theirs.

You lost the group because you were god awful at home.

How many games did Fergie needless rotate, chop change his team and formation throught the comp? Possibly 14 different back fours in all comps this year!

Your squad was clearly the weakest it's been in a number of season but no action from Fergie and you even shipped of a couple of defenders and expected kids to do a job...

Anyway done now,if you had of scrapped through you really wouldn't be able to compete with Eurpoes other clubs.

This will have a knock effect in the league also with confidence at a all time low, dropping gpoints to the likes of Newcastle and injury to key players such as Hernandez ( the only bright spark in the team) and now Vidic (that looked a nasty one)

Happy days tongue.gif

Well i admire your devotion to the game then Devil. Can't imagine waking up at 3am to watch Liverpool play Basel.

We went with 1 striker up because our other striking options weren't that strong, and we have midfielders that can fill the role of playing alongside Shrek. Had Hernandez been available, or had Welbeck or Macheda been match sharp, i have no doubt they would have started. Berba likewise, but his problem not so much match sharpness, rather form.

And speaking of form, Rooney seems to have lost his too, well certainly in terms of finding the back of the net.

You can't recall any noticeable chances? Park had a golden one early on. Rooney had a couple of half chances too. I accept though we lacked cutting edge.

In summary though, i don't think there was too much wrong with the tactics. We set up with what we had to work with. Bottom line was, not enough players performed to their ability. Nani was about the only one who came close. When that happens, it is hardly surprising when results don't go your way.

Fair enough...

Man U have had some good runs in the past 4 years in the CL - is it 3 finals and a quarters?

It seems a massive wake up, to get knocked out this early and given the comments on here today it seems it was expected?

You surely need to get in a top CM in January as that seems to be one area you have struggled more than others.
