Thailand's 'Red Shirts' commemorate first anniversary of crackdown

BANGKOK (BNO NEWS) -- The Red-shirt supporters of Thailand's anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) gathered on Thursday in Bangkok to mark the anniversary of the May 19 army crackdown on protesters.

MCOT Online news reported that supporters of the Red Shirt movement gathered at Ratchaprasong, Bangkok's prime business and shopping zone, to commemorate the death of the 92 people who were killed during last year's protest. On May 19, protesters clashed with police, leaving 92 dead and more than a thousand injured, after the UDD held a 69-day demonstration in an effort to topple his government.

Acting UDD chairwoman Thida Thavornseth earlier called on the government to take responsibility for the loss of life and apologized to the public and retailers in the area who will face inconvenience during the demonstration.

Police closed some roads leading to the site after the large number of demonstrators caused snarled traffic. According to police spokesman Pol Maj Gen Prawuth Thawornsiri, 13 companies of uniformed and plainclothes police, were deployed in the area.

He said officials will closely monitor the proceedings and any speeches on stage cannot mention the monarchy.
