Egyptians protest to keep revolution alive

2011-05-21 00:55:08 GMT+7 (ICT)

CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- Egyptian activists gathered on Friday in Tahrir square to demand the release of political prisoners and trials of corrupt regime figures, Ahram online reported.

Protesters wore black to remember those who lost their lives in the revolution and marched to Qasr el-Nil bridge, the site of the most dramatic battles between security forces and protesters during the Egyptian revolution. During the protest, which was called "Renewing the revolution and in memory of the martyrs", people chanted slogans like "we don't feel the change; we are going back to Tahrir."

Protesters were circled by military police.

Activists distributed flyers insisting that Mubarak and his family and corrupt regime figures be tried for their crimes, even if they return all the stolen money to the country.

Egypt's ruling military council on Wednesday informed that it is not considering granting amnesty to ousted President Hosni Mubarak even after he returned his properties and assets on Tuesday. Mubarak is accused of ordering the killing of protesters in Tahrir Square during the January 25 Revolution as well as many abuse of power and illicit profiteering counts.

Amnesty International released a report on Thursday saying that at least 840 people were killed and over 6,000 people were injured in the violent repression. The release of the report came two days before former Interior Minister Habib El Adly goes on trial on charges arising from the killings of protesters.
