Egypt's military releases Tahrir Square detainees

CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- A military court released protesters and those who attacked them when the military violently dispersed a gathering at Cairo's Tahrir Square on March 9, Ahram Online news reported.

According to members of the "No to Military Trials of Civilians" group, all those arrested by Egypt's military during Tahrir Square's forced evacuation have been released. Others arrested on other occasions, however, are still detained.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces declared on their official Facebook page that all 120 arrested on 9 March will have their sentences reduced and suspended. Those sentenced to seven, five or three years will have their sentence reduced to only one year and suspended, while those sentenced to one year will have their sentence reduced to six months and suspended.

On March 9, the army entered Tahrir Square and beat protesters who refused to leave because the January 25 demands had not yet been met. The army was assisted by what the protesters labelled as "thugs," but they claimed they are business owners who have been affected by the sit-in.

Both attackers and protesters were arrested that day.

Egyptian activists gathered on Friday in Tahrir square to demand the release of political prisoners and trials of corrupt regime figures. Amnesty International released a report on Thursday saying that at least 840 people were killed and over 6,000 people were injured in the violent repression that took place during the Egyptian revolution earlier this year.
