Iceland's most active volcano erupts

2011-05-22 03:31:01 GMT+7 (ICT)

REYKJAVIK (BNO NEWS) -- Iceland's most active volcano, the Grímsvötn, started erupting on late Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The Icelandic Meteorlogical Office confirmed the eruption in a brief warning, giving no other details. It started at around 5.30 p.m. local time, according to local media.

In 2010, the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland caused an unprecedented disruption of air travel in northern Europe.

Volcano in south-east Iceland erupts

Reykjavik/Stockholm - A precautionary flight ban remained in place in a 220-kilometre radius around a volcano in south-east Iceland that began to erupt over the weekend, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said Sunday.

The plume above the Grimsvotn volcano, which erupted Saturday, was estimated to be at least 17 kilometres high, maybe higher, geophysicist Einar Kjartansson told the German Press Agency dpa.

But the prevailing winds suggested that the Grimsvotn ash cloud would in the coming days blow north and not affect mainland Europe.

The volcano is the most active on the North Atlantic island and is located under the Vatnajokull glacier, the biggest in Iceland.

An analysis of the volcanic ash in the plume was pending, Kjartansson said, while ashfall has been reported in some parts in the south-east of the country.

The eruptions appeared to be stronger compared to when Grimsvotn erupted in 2004 and 1996, but the effects were still too early to predict, Kjartansson said.//DPA

I think he is referring to the end of the world group which was saying the world would end this last weekend. :)
