Hundreds join Tiananmen democracy march in Hong Kong

2011-05-29 21:31:12 GMT+7 (ICT)

HONG KONG (BNO NEWS) -- Hundreds of pro-democracy supporters in Hong Kong demanded justice on Sunday for the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown in Beijing, Radio Television Hong Kong reported.

Protesters wearing black and white as a sign of mourning marched from Victoria Park to the Central Government Offices. They carried banners and placards, along with a three-meter tall replica of the "Goddess of Democracy" statue and a black makeshift coffin to mark the anniversary of the killing of student protesters on June 4, 1989.

The Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, the organizers of the march, said the arrest of prominent activists on the mainland, such as artist Ai Weiwei, had encouraged people to take part in the march this year. The protesters demanded the release of activists, writers and lawyers who have been detained in China in recent months.

The secretary general of the Alliance, Albert Ho, said the truth of June 4 should be respected and the movement of June 4 should be vindicated.
