German diplomat arrested over human trafficking claims in UAE

BERLIN, GERMANY (BNO NEWS) -- Berlin authorities on Tuesday arrested a German diplomat for his role in a human trafficking network in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the DPA news agency reported.

The 40-year-old diplomat, only identified as Martin T., was the head of the visa department at the German consulate general in Dubai in the UAE. He is accused of aiding the smuggling of people from Afghanistan into Germany.

According to an extensive investigation, the diplomat assisted in at least eight cases of human trafficking to Germany via Dubai. Martin allegedly procured false work permits but he denied all accusations.

The German diplomat reportedly received about 3,000 Euros ($4,314) for obtaining the necessary approvals and paperwork. Authorities also detained an Afghan accomplice in Hamburg.

In December 2010, the German Foreign ministry was involved in a bribes-for-visas scandal. The allegations included several German embassies that were suspected of taking bribes in exchange for issuing visas.

The accusations involved Germany's employees with diplomatic mission in Africa, South America and countries in Eastern Europe. In consequence, consular staff members were fired and prosecuted.
