Israeli fugitive finally nabbed

By The Nation

An Israeli man, wanted in Belgium for robbery and double murders, and who has been living in Thailand for eight years, was arrested yesterday.

Thai police officers and chief of the Israeli police's Asia-Pacific arm, Gaki Obet, arrested the 41-year-old suspect, Ben David Levy, at an apartment in Soi Prachasongkhro 23 in Bangkok's Din Daeng district.

The Israeli Embassy had told Thai police to look out for a fugitive who was convicted of robbing a grocery store and killing two people in Belgium, but fled on September 29, 2003, during his four-day bail period.

The fugitive reportedly used a fake Maldives passport under the name Dmitry Milev to enter Thailand. He then married a Thai woman and had two children. It took Interpol and Thai police about a decade to locate him, and he will be extradited to Israel soon.

Go to jail, go directly to jail, or go and live in Thailand.

If you can’t do the time, don`t do the crime, or you could always live in Thailand of course.

My questions are; when these murderers, thieves, cutthroats and child rapists scurry away to Thailand, how do they obtain an income? Who supports them? And how do they evade Immigration?

And did you notice that the Israeli police had tracked him down and tipped off the Thai authorities?

And please remember, he has not been found guilty of any crime at this point, there are always two sides to every story... feel sorry for his wife and two kids...

Exactly...... the man should be sent to and put on trial in Belgium, not Israel. In fact <deleted> how are the Israeli government/police able to bring him back to Israel and not let him stand trial for a crime he committed in Belgium.. The usual double standards that usually come from there.

I am pretty sure that international law requires the defendant to extradited to the country where the crime was committed, if not then all charges are null and void for extradition from any other country, of course if he goes back to Belgium, then he can be arrested, but you cannot be extradited twice for the same offence!

Did you even read the article? Let me make this a bit easier for you.

Few corrections:

The man was convicted and jailed in Israel 20 years ago for the brutal murder of two diamond merchants in Belgium. He was sentenced to two life sentences. He escaped Belgium after the murder and the robbery and was arrested in Israel when he tried to enter with a fake passport.

The man, Levi Ben-David, failed to return to the Ayalon Prison, where he was serving a double life sentence, after a 48-hour leave on September 29, 2000. He escaped using a fake passport and moved to Thailand. It took Interpol 10 years to locate him in Bangkok.

According to the Press, his Thai wife knew about her Husband's actions before she married him but did not mind.

This guy is not a saint, and the families of the victims are very glad that he was coughs finally.

He is of Georgian origin, and used to own a Diamond shop in Antwerp, Belgium, but his own family kicked him out of the family business because they did not approved of his behaver. Then he turned into crime and robbed his former supplier (also an Israeli guy).

The Belgian authorities allowed him to be sentenced in Israel.

The silence of he bigots is deafening now that the facts come out.Had TVF's contingent espousing their nasty views bothered to check the facts first, their moral outrage and display of drama would have been avoided.

Or maybe not. whistling.gif

These are always interesting reports. It took Interpol more than a decade to locate him. It makes Interpol look good. In real life it probably went closer like this:

He went out Israeli restaurant and was spotted there by a policeman/ holiday maker who recognized and informed the Israeli embassy who in return informed the Belgian embassy and the police.

I remember that story.

Some 20 years ago a Jewish diamond broker and his mistress were killed in Antwerp by a Jewish criminal.

It has nothing to do with a "grocery shop".

The exact date was 31st May 1992.

The fugitive, Levi Ben-David, was arrested yesterday , exactly 19 years after the killing.

After an international campaign, in cooperation with the Israeli Police, Bangkok police arrested David, who escaped during a 48-hour holiday from jail in 2000 and never returned.

He was living under a false identity with his Thai wife in Bangkok. The couple had 2 children.

Ben - David lived in Belgium since 1982, working for his family's jewelry business. Then he met with Mr. Joseph Jacoby, an Israeli jewelry importer, and made some business with him. The victim, Mr. Jacoby was married with two children.

They conducted their businessoffice at the Antwerp Diamond Bourse.

In 1992, Ben-David had some financial difficulties, after he was suspended from the family business by his own family because his family did not like the fact that he associated with a woman named Lillian Strar ( A Dutch model) . Due to the economic difficulties, Ben-David and his friend, Guy Agogalshuvili, rob and murder the jewelers. Ben-David bought a gun equipped with a silencer, and arranged a meeting with the victim, claiming that his friend, wishes to start a business in the jewelry, and want to buy jewelry from them.

The meeting took place on 29 May 1992 in their office of jewelers, during which they were presented different jewelry. Ben-David deterred from carrying out the robbery that day, and held another meeting with them two days later. On Sunday, May 31, 1992 Ben-David Met with the victims and his girlfriend, Lilian waited in the car.

During the meeting, Ben-David shot the two victims with his pistol. They were only injured, so Ben-David stabbed them with scissors and smashed a wooden statue and a TV set on their heads. After the murder Ben-David took the jewelry and left the building, carrying a bag full of loot. In total catch value was about 300 thousand dollars. Ben-David's pants were stained with blood. Ben-David and Lillian escaped from Belgium the same day carrying the loot, and two weeks later fled to Israel using false identities (forged Dutch passports). Later on, his partner to crime, Mr. Agogalshuvili also came to Israel. In September that year the three were arrested, and Lillian was extradited to Belgium. The two killers, because they are Israeli citizens, were prosecuted in Israel. Court sentenced the Ben-David double life sentence for double murder and armed robbery. Provision has been widely covered in the world, partly because Sstrar was Vice Miss Rotterdam.

On 29 September 2000, New Year's Eve, Ben-David, was on a 48-hour holiday from AyalonPrison, and did not return. Legal authorities had no idea where he disappeared. Assessment was that he was using a false name and travel around the world, after he fled the country using a false passport.

Attached is the article from the Israeli press.

For me, I am, as always, amazed by the "2 life sentences" ...

How many lives do these people have ? (is it nine like cats ?)

B)

Its not the 2 life sentences that amaze me, although contradictory in terms its used in many legal jurisdictions. What does amaze me is that after serving just 8 years he is released on a 48 hour "holiday".

About INTERPOL

INTERPOL is the World’s largest international police organization, with 188 member countries. It exists to help create a safer world by supporting law enforcement agencies worldwide to combat crime.

INTERPOL has four core functions, which provide:

Secure global police communications

Data services and databases for police

Support to police services

Police training and development

Would peeps please note that Interpol do not go looking for anybody. I suppose that it is too much to ask that the Clark Kent types at The Nation take this startling news onboard.
