I bought a new Toyota Vios early last year. When I had my third service done recently, the Toyota mechanics from a different branch from where I bought the car in Pattaya, changed the original SM 20-50 oil to SM 10-30 oil. I thought 10-30 oil is meant to be used in colder climates. I only drive the car in Pattaya and Bangkok. The car has so far has done only very little mileage, about 5000 KM, as I do a lot of trips overseas. Is there a reason to change from 20-50 to 10-30 oil and can it cause any complications in the long run? Should I ask them to change back to 20-50 oil when the next service is due? I am going for another 3-months overseas trip shortly and the next service is due when I return. The car will not be used when I am away. Any replies will be appreciated.

In you hand book there should be a scale with different climate temperatures and the recommended oil grade to suit the climate and the engine, stick to it. If a too thin an oil is used in a hot environment then you ''could'' create a problem down the line.

Strange to me that you had 20W - 50 oil in it in the first place and I thought 10W -30 was for diesel trucks.

Usually for the 1.5L 1NZ-FE the recommended oil is 5W - 30.

I'd change it to 20W50 as small bore, high compression, high revving engines generate more heat and also need more lubrication to support the bearings and higher compression..

Used nothing less then 20W50 in my cars for years and in my racing engines with NO failures over 25 years of the hardest and longest forms of racing and excellent durability.

Note that the race engines I'm speaking of are only slightly more modified street engines that tach much higher then your average street car and some not any different so it is an absolute application of information..These cars were also mostly raced or driven in hot climbs.

Just changed the oil in my car to 20W50 Mobil1 from 10W30 Mobil1 and the car loves life now and showed an immediate increase in power and smoothness..

Go with what's stated in the car's manual...or contact Toyota customer service in Bangkok for their official recommendation.

Yep, as l stated above.

On a modern engine, lubrication and getting oil/pressure to those far off locations is paramount for the fine tolerances of a modern engine. The old days everything had 20/50, now oils have been designed to ''save'' modern fine tolerance engines, that's why your handbook will show different grades for different climates. IF IF IF, 20/50 was OK any time/where they would say so, but they don't.

If synthetic oil is used l would not worry as much as the coating left behind after shut down and oil returned to the sump is an engine wear saver.:)

I thought 20W - 50 oil was old hat now, been around for yonks.

I can only get Mobil 1 oil in 5W - 50 around here.

What do you expect in Sukhothai, the fist Cars didn't get there till 2010. A Car is essential there for escape purposes.Cockpit is the only place worth visiting., although my friend found an Air Con Bar by the Stone Lumps Park..As for Oil, 20/50 isn't that Bad,but not fashionable with Rev Heads.:D

20W - 50 isn't bad, agreed, used it in a Volvo for over 20years before I gave the car to my son.

When " Cockpit " showed me Mobil 1 while doing an oil change I said OK being 5W - 50 graded I wasn't bothered oils have improved much in years gone by.

As for Sukhothai cars bought one in 2005 but had to wait 4months on delivery, not 5 years.

In Sukhothai there's many restaurant bars with air-con rooms and bars with air-con if you know where to go but then again I enjoy sitting outside in and around our little village having a beer I wasn't able to do that at English pubs much.:)

If the OP took it to Toyota, yes there own oil, they have plastic containers with there name on it, that I only know from going to different franchises in Mae-sot , Phitsanulok, Sukhothai and Tak branches.

If the Honda dealer is like most, managed franchises, it might be recycled oil.

Gee that's funny if you guys weren't shopping in TESCO or Big C and choose a real shop like Autobacs form your high quality automotive products you'd know in the real world outside of your limited one's it's very readily available..

I did mis-write though in saying it was Mobil1, it's not as that's synthetic, it's Mobil Super 1000 and it's also rated for CNG and LPG applications..

Now, I wonder why they'd recommend and rate it for that use :whistling: ?
