NARATHIWAT, THAILAND (BNO NEWS) -- Three separatist militants were killed on Thursday in a clash with Thai security forces in the southern province of Narathiwat, the Bangkok Post reported.

The clash erupted after soldiers from Narathiwat Task Force 32 in Bacho district encountered five armed militants while patrolling near their camp on the Budo mountain range. Two other insurgents fled the scene.

The soldiers seized two M16 rifles, one pistol, one hand grenade, one land mine and more than 100 rounds of assorted ammunition.

Since 2004, around 4,000 people have been killed in Thailand's southern regions of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, as local insurgent groups renewed their fighting efforts against the government. More than 7,000 people have been injured in violent incidents launched by separatist militants.
