Icelander in Thailand Accused of Providing Drug Mule

Brynjar Mettinisson, who is currently in custody in Bangkok on suspicion of drug violations, is accused of having attempted to find a drug mule for an Arabian man, with whom he was in online contact, to smuggle one liter of methamphetamine in liquid form to Japan.

This was reported by Chamnarn Viravan, the primary Consul for Iceland in Thailand. He has not received a copy of the police’s report but has been in contact with Mettinisson’s Thai girlfriend, Fréttabladid reports.

Viravan’s account of the events differs significantly from that reported in the Icelandic media up until now.

Mettinisson’s mother explained last week that her son had been arrested along with a stranger from Australia (other reports say he was an acquaintance), who was carrying drugs while Mettinisson had none and maintained his innocence.

However, she pointed out that she may have misunderstood her son’s girlfriend.

Viravan said Mettinisson’s girlfriend had told him she had overheard a conversation between him and the Arabian man on Skype. Mettinisson was under the impression that the drug was legal and that it would be delivered to a physician in Japan.

He was supposed to receive USD 2,500 (ISK 280,000, EUR 1,700) for finding someone to deliver the drug. Mettinisson found someone willing to do it, who proved to be an undercover policeman.

He and the Arabian man, who carried the drug, decided to meet the mule at the Grand Mercure Fortune hotel in Bangkok on Monday last week where they were arrested.

Mettinisson was sentenced to three months in custody. Viravan has provided him a lawyer and they are supposed to meet this week. The trial is scheduled for early August.

The Icelander has been sentenced to three months. The trial will be held in early August. Does not compute.

He was placed in remand ... no bail.

The reporting is lousy and seems nothing but heresay. So far, based on the playground tittle tattle of he said she said - I feel sympathy towards the Icelander who is banged up at the court's convenience [3 motnhs ] until they feel like truning a wheel slightly.

God help any of us who fall foul of this system - guilty until proven payer.

Icelandic citizen Brynjar Mettinisson has been released from prison in Thailand after having been in custody since May 2011.

Brynjar had been accused of drug offenses, but was found innocent in August. Despite having been acquitted in August, Brynjar had to remain in prison while the prosecution decided whether to appeal.

Ruv.is reports that Brynjar was met by his mother at the airport in Denmark and is now on his way to visit his family, who live in Sweden.

Icelander Innocent in Thai Prison for One Year

Brynjar Mettinisson was found innocent on charges of drug violations before Thai courts on Tuesday. He has been held in prison since May 2011 and he may have to remain there for another month while the prosecution decides whether to appeal. “I was incredibly happy. The sun started to shine. It is indescribable,” Brynjar’s mother, Borghildur Antonsdóttir, told ruv.is after her son was acquitted.

She said Brynjar’s time in prison has been horrible and would like the Icelandic authorities to help free him. “He has been lying on a hard stone floor with no mattress and nothing, sharing a 20-30-square-meter-room with 72 other men,” Borghildur said of the Bangkok prison facilities. She added her son has suffered both physical and mental violence.

“I think I have moved past the anger. The only thing on my mind now is to get him out. To hug him. It’s the only thing I think about,” Borghildur said, adding that she finds it ridiculous that Brynjar must remain behind bars for another month even after having been found not guilty. Borghildur stated she must pay more than ISK 8 million (USD 66,000, EUR 54,000) in bail to have him freed sooner but she doesn’t have that kind of money and therefore appeals to Icelandic authorities to intervene.

I wonder if he will be compensated for all the loss suffered, both material, immaterial, and defamatory, for his incarceration whilst innocent?

Yeah like that's going to happen, you got to put that on par with 'customer service' in Thailand.........non-existent cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif
