IMF to consider Lagarde, Carstens for managing director

2011-06-14 21:04:24 GMT+7 (ICT)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday said it will consider France's Lagarde and Mexico's Carstens for its top job of managing director. Israel's Fischer has been disqualified.

The period for submitting nominations for the position of managing director at the Fund closed on Friday. And while 67-year-old Israeli central bank governor Stanley Fischer had said he also wanted the position, officials at the IMF were not willing to change rules which put an age limit of 65 for first-time managing directors.

Both Agustin Castens, the Governor of the Bank of Mexico, and Christine Lagarde, French Minister of Economy, Industry and Employment, have received support from a number of countries. But it will be up to the IMF Executive Board to make the decision.

"The Executive Board will meet with the candidates in Washington D.C. and, thereafter, meet to discuss the strengths of the candidates and make a selection," the Executive Board said in a statement, adding that it would try to complete the process before June 30.

John Lipsky is currently acting managing director after Dominique Strauss-Kahn resigned last month. The resignation came days after Strauss-Kahn was arrested in New York over allegations of sexual assault.

According to the allegations, Strauss-Kahn forced a 32-year-old hotel maid at the Sofitel New York Hotel to perform oral sex on him twice before engaging in anal sexual conduct with her. He also grabbed the victim's breasts and vaginal area.
