mrbojangles
Anyone dare to ponder what Siam SuperFly will say when loss comes in Nov? :D I think he'll just carry on making wild predictions until he gets one right, after which he'll spend the next six months posting about how it got it right (bless him - I think he's lonely)
TizMe
From today's SMH: The Socceroos will be prepared for any orchestrated intimidation they may face ahead of and during next month's World Cup play-off in Uruguay and could even walk from the pitch in extreme circumstances, said Football Federation Australia chief executive John O'Neill yesterday. The FFA boss claimed the Uruguayan football establishment had directed a dirty-tricks campaign against the Socceroos four years ago and said this time Australia would send more experienced support staff to South America. The hostile reception afforded the Socceroos in Montevideo in 2001, including being greeted by an abusive mob at the airport, unsettled the squad before it crashed to a 3-0 defeat. O'Neill, who has urged FIFA to pick its most experienced European referee to control the match, even flagged the prospect of the Socceroos leaving the pitch if they were being treated in an unsporting manner. Citing as precedence Wallabies captain John Eales's threat to lead his team from the pitch in the 1999 Rugby World Cup final if officials did not stop their French opponents eye gouging, O'Neill said walking off was also a tactic of last resort for the Socceroos. "There was an orchestrated campaign by some pretty unsavoury parts of the Montevideo football establishment that went into a systematic objective of undermining the Socceroos, and we allowed their tactics to get to us," he said yesterday when asked what lessons had been learnt from the failed campaign of 2001. "It happens in sport. In some cultures the opposition teams are regarded as fair game. It's not on. These are FIFA matches. In 2001 the delays at the airport, the hostility at the airport, the spitting and then the over-reaction; the players got a siege mentality and then, at the end of the day, I understand that some players dropped their bundle on the playing field. "But I have seen it before, that a team can always come off the field. I was at the Rugby World Cup final in 1999 when the French resorted to eye gouging and John Eales told the referee, 'If this continues, I'm taking my team off the field'. If you have got a high-quality referee, good line judges, and the match is conducted according to the rules of FIFA, you should not get down to that. But, equally, we will not be shrinking violets. Physically, mentally, psychologically we will be absolutely prepared for this." And O'Neill promised Australia would not merely go to South America for the first leg of the play-off with survival and containment as their main objective. "We're not going into Montevideo hoping for them not to score too many goals. We're going in there to score goals. All we're saying is what happens on the pitch has to be allowed to be conducted in the spirit of fair play." The FFA has already had top-level talks with FIFA to make sure the game's global governing body is aware of the problems from 2001 and asked for "really high-quality" match officials. "We have expressed a preference that we get a referee from Europe, a high-quality match commissioner and that security for the team and player safety is at the top of their agenda," O'Neill said. "They have responded very positively and they have recognised what the issues were back in 2001. There's no point going down the path of tit for tat; if they treat us badly there, we will treat them badly here. No, this is all about fair play and a level playing field. "Sure, home-ground advantage is home-ground advantage. The 82,000 people who will be at Telstra Stadium in Sydney will be 95 per cent Australian supporters, and we know that 99.9 per cent of those who will be in Montevideo will be Uruguay supporters, but it's the conduct of the match and the preparations for the match that are critical. "We've had scouts in South America for the last 12 months looking at matches our opponents have been playing, looking at training facilities, hotels, just leaving no stone unturned. There are those things under our control and those things that are under FIFA's control. We have just got to make sure that the gatekeeper role that FIFA plays is done to the best of their ability." Australia will seek to minimise disruptions by training in Buenos Aires and flying into Montevideo the day before the game.
