My wife and I now have some time to prod a child together. As time goes for both of us (I am 44 and she 39), we decided that maybe it is time to get some professional help.

So I hope that some of you have been in the same sitiuasjon, who will share their experiences about how you got help to get a child.

There is talk of large sums, often THB 200,000 for each experiment, and there is no guarantee.

Do you have any advice to give us, we really want a child or two.

We both have undergone tests to see if there are medical reasons why we can not make a child, only "negative " was that she had some narrow fallopian tubes and has received medication for this.

According to doctors so can not find them any reason why we should not be able to get a child.

She has also gone on hormone treatment without that we have succeeded.

Have a friend probably 10 years older than you who produced two boys, about three years apart.

Whether or not coincidence, he claims both times were after he ate chilled oysters on the half shell, no hoi jokes, really.

Supposedly there is a big zinc doseage there that helps the swimmers.

I had a vasectomy years ago. Had 2 reversals and still no go. Came to Thailand never expecting to have children again. Went to Nawabutr Clinic in BKK and went through 2 IVF treatments, both successful and have now 3 children.

Nice children;-)

Can you you tell me a bit more about the IVF treatments? And may I ask how much you had to pay for each treatment?

I had the opposite problem- literally the only three times (3 sexual encounters) i did not use contraception in my life, the lady (s) in question got pregnant- 3 for 3. Im not even trying to brag, i just think its bizarre, especially when i hear stories of couples who takes years to get pregnant. If anything its a curse i have to be super careful all the time!

I was the problem in that my 2 vasectomy reversals never worked. My Thai wife contacted the Nawabutr Clinic to see if they could help us. They said they could by extracting sperm direct from the testes with a needle. They anesthetize you, and take her eggs and fertilize them that way. In total we had 14 eggs fertilized and 3 were used the first time resulting in a daughter. The rest of the eggs were frozen. That was 4 years ago and cost about 180,000 Baht. That included everything from initial consultation to implantation. Medications were included also.

Nine months after that we went back and had 2 frozen eggs/embryos implanted at a cost of about 100,000 Baht. That resulted in twin boy/girl.

Nawabutr Clinic is a non profit fertility clinic and I recommended them. Their fees are payable in installments as you proceed through your IVF stages and they give discount for cash. If you don't go through with the whole course of the treatment then your payments stop accordingly. Their number is 02-6777370-3 and they speak very good English. They have a website but it's in Thai. On there you'll get a location map. Please remember IVF treatment is not 100%. We were just very lucky.

All the major hospitals have infertility clinics and there are also stand-alone facilities that do only this.

And no matter where you go, there is no guarantee, and repeat treatments may be needed.

If you do a search on this forum for "infertility" you'll find many recommendations for specific places/docs.

The least expensive option is the infertility clinic at Chulalonghorn Hospital (government hospital) but being a govt hospital, long waits at each visit and a lot of red tape.

The infertility specialists at Chula also have a private practice at a nearby clinic, I forget the name but if you search this forum should find it. It is more costly than going to Chula but still a lot less expensive than the private hospitals.

Had my first child at 58, partly courtesy of Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok - not IVF (fertilisation outside the womb) but IUI - same same artificial insemination. Much cheaper than IVF and worth a go if your partner is having trouble conceiving. They get the timing right for you, concentrate the man's sperm, deliver it effectively (but not as enjoyably) and administer drugs to the woman at the exact moments. Cost between 20,000-25,000 baht and my wife conceived at the third attempt. Payathai hospital is cheaper and probably just as effective - around 12,000-15,000 I seem to remember

The doctors don't practice at one particular clinic as you say Sheryl. The doctor that deals with the male side of infertility at the Nawabutr Fertility Clinic also practices at Chula. The Nawabutr clinic was the cheapest I could find 3 years ago. It's non profit making.

If you are looking for an alternative to Nawabutr, another very good clinic that is Thai style but highly recommended is Arun Amarin Medical Clinic. You want to see Professor Lungsin. Staff only speak Thai, but Dr. Lungsin speaks fluent English. Associated with Siriraj hospital. So between Nawabutr and Arun Amarin you have the 2 best government hospitals in Bangkok covered. Probably unlikely to get cheaper than this.

The clinic is open MWF evenings and Sat/Sun mornings. There is usually a queue of at least an hour so be ready. You will find it mentioned on all the Thai infertility forums. It is directly across Arun Amarin Road from Wat Arun next to the Green Leaf restaurant.

BTW, you can also go to Chula or Siriraj directly if you want. The problem with doing this is that the queues here are usually much longer than if you go to the clinic, and the doctors don't have as much time to spend with you. Much easier to see the doctors after hours in their clinics.

Another low cost option if you happen to be up north, is to go to Maharaj/Suan Dawk in Chiang Mai. The doctors here are the same ones that run the Kullapat Medical Clinic which is extremely modern and quite good. But by going through the government hospital you can get the entire IVF procedure highly discounted right up until you need the advanced procedures such as 5 day blastocysts w/ assisted hatching that aren't offered through the government hospitals. Then you switch to the clinic.
