Scores killed when passenger buses collide in southern Sudan

2011-06-18 08:12:37 GMT+7 (ICT)

KAMPALA, UGANDA (BNO NEWS) -- At least 29 people were killed on Friday when two passenger buses collided in South Sudan near the border with Uganda, Uganda's New Vision newspaper reported on Saturday.

The report said the accident happened on early Friday morning along the Juba road in Pargera trading center, about 46 kilometers (28 miles) into South Sudan. At least 17 Ugandans were among the 29 fatalities.

"We have information that several other people have been injured and have been taken to clinics in Sudan, but we don't know how many yet," Johnson Kilama, the police spokesman in northern Uganda, told the newspaper.

Late last year, Southern Sudanese transport minister Anthony Makana warned that road accidents were on the rise in Southern Sudan's capital, Juba. He said that the number of people dying from road accidents exceeded that of the people who die from HIV/AIDS.
