Scary Dad Phenomena

Featured Replies

In light of Fathers Day this weekend I thought it might be fun to talk about our dads.

My father was and still is a major influence on me and my life and for that I am grateful.

But, I read this article and loved this Obama quote as, in some ways, it really reminded me of my dad:

Malia Obama turns thirteen next month, meaning our President will officially be the father of a teenager. He doesn't seem too worried: of his girls, he says, "I have men with guns that surround them often." And thus Obama joins the ranks of the Scary Dads

My dad didn't need to say anything to be scary, at 6'4 and over 200 pounds, he just looked scary. That said, most of my male friends and boyfriends thought he was very cool and really liked him.

If you go on to read the article, Obama does temper it a bit:

According to AFP, Obama has said, "I'm not anticipating complete mayhem for the next four or five years, but I understand teenagehood is complicated." In addition to the guys with guns, he says, "a great incentive for running for re-election is that it means they never get in the car with a boy who had a beer." Also, if Malia does get a beau, "I might invite him over to the Oval Office, ask him for his GPA, find out what his intentions are in terms of career." He added, "Malia, Sasha, if you're watching this, I'm just joking."

The thing my dad always said, "I am a man and I know what those b@stards are thinking about my daughters." So, its not that he was a scary dad, but a concerned one who wanted to ensure his daughters were treated with respect.

I had a friend who was a black belt holder in Akido.

When his daughter got to the age where she started dating her father used to show the boy how he could smash concrete blocks and wooden two by fours with a blow from his fists.

I don't know if the daughter appreciated the humor of that or not.

my dad was a 6 ft 5 tattoed biker who was a recreational drug user for over 40 years... he was a boxer, race car driver, bouncer amoungst other things & there was nothing & no one he feared or backed down from except....my mum :) all 5ft 5 petite frame of her. he claimed she was pure evil when crossed so boyfriends never really had any problem with my dad but he did have a habit of warning them not to cross my mum. :)

That said, when my sister's split up with her husband my dad did make the offer to have him "taken care of". my sister, grateful as she was, declined but it was nice to know the offer was there. :D

My dad, 6'4 ex rugby player and his wee 5'4 wife. Sorry, 5'4 and a half.

He was a big softy - my mum ruled the roost (still does). But when he raised his voice, which was when we had been really naughty, you could hear it. And scurry to your room....

I think he spanked me once. Otherwise it was the voice. I can still hear it now!!!

Boyfriends?!! He made it into a joke of scaring them off!!! And would laugh about it afterwards for hours on end. "Not good enough for my daughter" etc. Asking them those stupid questions, when we were 17 years old, "and will you provide for her" etc,!! I even had boyfriends who would call up before coming to get me for an evening out to check if my Dad would be there or not!!

Now I wonder where I got my rather strange sense of humour from..!!!

What's strange about your sense of humour?

Maybe you should keep it hidden, like I do...

My kids were scared to tell me if they had problems with other kids for fear of what I might do. nobody messes with my family. I was also taught respect for all girls and women. It was entrenched so deeply that it actually affected my relationships with girls who were prepared to go much further than my boundries would allow me to go. I haven't changed much and I still stick to my boundries.
