THE UNITED KINGDOM PROPOSES THAILAND BARTER AGRICULTURAL GOODS FOR WEAPONRY

The British Government has proposed to Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra that the two countries barter farm products for military arms.

Dr. Thaksin unveiled the approach in an interview with a Radio Thailand reporter in London after his discussion with British Prime Minister Tony Blair yesterday. He said Britain wants closer relationship with Thailand and proposed that the two countries replace the existing cooperation framework under the Action Agenda concluded in 1998 with a more concrete ‘Plan of Action’ which will stipulate cooperation projects, period of implementation and steps to fulfill the projects.

The Thai Prime Minister also stated that Britain wants to expand cooperation with Thailand through its AE System company which is an arms agency. The British leader proposed that Thailand barter its agricultural products for military weapons through the company and Britain would use the money earned from selling Thai farm goods to support development in Thailand.

Prime Minister Thaksin indicated that he was satisfied with the result of the discussion, during which Britain showed readiness to cooperate with Thailand in trade, investment and politics. He was also confident that Britain would throw support to Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai in the latter’s quest to become the new UN Secretary-General.

The Prime Minister said he was granted an audience with Prince Philips, the Duke of Edinburg at the Buckingham Palace, during which he extended the Thai Government’s invitation for Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince to participate in the celebrations on the 60th anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol’s accession to the Throne.
