Malaysia sends armoured cars to Thai border

The Malaysian government said on Saturday it had moved three armoured cars to the Thai border in a move it claimed was designed to discourage illegal entry by Thai nationals. Deputy Internal Security Minister Noh Omar said that since April of last year, Malaysian frontier guards has turned back 6,348 Thai nationals trying to enter Malaysia illegally.

The official Malaysian news agency Bernama quoted the minister as saying he hoped for better security on the Thai side.

"I believe it would be better if the Thais also increase their border control to prevent their people from entering Malaysia illegally," Bernama quoted the minister at a press conference during a tour of the Malaysian side of the border near Sungai Golok.

Malaysian security agencies are now patrolling the border areas around the clock, including increasing roadblocks, according to Bernama. They include a number of security agencies including marine and traffic police, general operations forces, the military, and the immigration and customs departments.

Malaysia has beefed up border security ever since 131 Thai Muslims from southern Narathiwat,

fled across the border into northern Malaysia ( an Islamic nation )........ excuse, they feared for their lives.

Since the beginning of this year, more than 900 people have been killed in southern Thailand.

Authorities blame the Islamic separatists and organised crime for the violence.

Just about a month ago, two Thai naval officers were abducted, totured, and killed by the Islamic separatists

in southern Thailand. It was reported in the press, that the separatists, may bring the fight right up to Bangkok,

Phuket and beyond. As a result few Malaysian tourists dare to visit southern Thailand, especially, Sungai Golok,

Betong and even Hatyai is effected. It seems the tourists to Hatyai have dropped down to more than 80 percent.

Malaysia calls on Thailand to increase border security: report

KUALA LUMPUR: -- Malaysia has called on neighbouring Thailand to tighten up security along their shared border to prevent the illegal entry of Thais into the country, a report said.

Deputy Internal Security Minister Noh Omar made the call late Saturday after Malaysia added three armoured cars to patrols along its northern border with Thailand in a bid to deter illegal crossings.

"I believe it would be better if the Thais also increase their border control to prevent their people from entering Malaysia illegally," he was quoted as saying by the state Bernama news agency.

Malaysia has ramped up border security ever since 131 Thai Muslims, mostly from southern Narathiwat province, fled across the border into northern Kelantan state in August, saying they feared for their lives.

The group is currently sheltering in a holding centre in northern Terengganu state and a report Sunday said arrangements were being made for them to meet with Thai officials.

"The matter is being worked out this Ramadan month," Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak was quoted as saying in the Star daily.

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Chidchai Vanasathidya said last week he would meet with Najib on October 25 to discuss the status of the Thai Muslims.

Since January 2004, more than 950 people have been killed in southern Thailand. Authorities blame the violence on a complex web of Islamic separatists, organised crime and local corruption.
