BEVERLY HILLS (BNO NEWS) -- Actor Peter Falk, who was best known for his role as Lieutenant Columbo in the television detective series with the same name, died on late Thursday evening. He was 83.

A statement released by his family said Falk died peacefully at his home in Beverly Hills, California. It gave no details about the cause of his death, but the actor had long been suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Falk was nominated for an Academy Award twice, one for the 1960 movie 'Murder, Inc.' and another for the 1961 comedy film 'Pocketful of Miracles.' He also won five Emmy Awards, four of them for his role in 'Columbo.'

Falk's final film appearance was in the 2009 movie 'American Cowslip,' bringing to an end his 50-year career. He is survived by his wife, Shera, of 34 years and two daughters from a previous marriage.

R.I.P. Peter, I loved your great acting

A great actor. Colombo was one of my favorite series.

RIP Peter. Columbo was a favorite of mine

RIP. A great actor. Will never forget his Columbo line "Oh, there's just one more thing ...", being the killer part to his investigations.

"The Rumpled Detective"

Wonderful actor, great series.

R.I.P. Mr Falk. You gave pleasure to millions

He (Falk) was in the war film Anzio with Robert Mitchum, one of my WW2 film favourites.

Not to forget his many contributions to the iconic work of John Cassavetes - the true Independent cinema. R.I.P.

RIP Mr Falk - loved your contributions to the entertainment media.

RIP Peter, enjoyed watching your TV movies.

and of course in 65's "the great race" w/ jack lemmon, tony curtis and natalie wood.

A great actor. Colombo was one of my favorite series.

Brilliant man, eyes glued to the screen in the U.K. every time he was on. ''and just one more thing'' always made me smile----like "" did you say it rained last Thursday? '' then he used to go from the room---good stuff will miss the humour as well as the actor. Got his coat from an Oxfam shop ?:) memories.
