Okay being in the rural boonies we get lots of bugs into the house at night especially after rain...these bugs die and then attract many species of ants....

Now in the past it was spray and spray and also used sugared/Boracic acid in little pot to attract and kill the nests by the critters taking it back..

Well this year it did not work the critters seem to ignore my banquet ...so found out from google that ants like fat as well as sweet stuff...

So mixed 1tsp of boracic acid one of sugar and one of peanut/cooking oil in jam jar of warm water.....started dropping a teaspoon at strategic spots ie door/window jambs corners etc...okay little puddles but soon got eaten up by the critters ..especially those tiny little biting buggers that climb the walls and get blown into your bed by fans etc...

So after three applications we now have a live ant free house! ...loads of dead ants but soon swept up and any residual banquet is easy to wipe up....

Now it's time to reload the trap for that rat that eats residual dog food....and if I could just get the Geckos house trained

One of our friends built a "moat" around their house. It's about 4" deep and 6" wide. It's full of guppies. I've never seen an ant in his house.

Nifty solution, a moat but I hope it was " (inches), not ' ( feet).I have a lot of problems with ants.I use Aswin Powder.Works very ,very well. Pour it on ,ants are gone in less than 2 minutes.Comes in a yellow tin 250 grams ,I suspect. Will get rid of Ants,Termites,Cockroaches and Weevils, but i only have a problem with Ants, some of which are really bitey. Ouch !!!

Water works good ive seen thais put water under the legs of there food larder to stop ants climbing up and eating the food

Just remember that water attracts frogs that attract snakes. I'm glad you got the ant problem fixed, David. I used the spray and the powder in my room and it got rid of the ants after about a week.

The theory is fine, unless you have dogs that drink the water !

Borax and icing sugar or honey ants love it lap it up return to the hive and happily feed it to the young and queen.

Then all hell breaks loose they get gas and ants cant fart so they explode "pop"

IT really works mix up well equal amounts.

I agree, I use Aswin powder around the perimeter of the house when I see ants gathering, sprinkle some powder where the ants are entering their hole and five minutes later, dead. It's cheap and you can get it at Tesco.

I also use a fogger about every three months or so in the house, turn off the power inside the house, close all windows and doors, open two foggers and get the hell out. I do it when we go shopping in Udon so it sits like that for the day. When we get home open all doors and windows and turn on all fans and let it air out for 30 minutes or so. Its amazing what dead creatures you'll find that have been living in your abode. I brought the foggers home with me when I work in the US, I haven't seen them for sale in Thailand

Anyone figures out how to stop jing jocks they'll be a millionare.

Nowhere near as good as Aswin Powder.I have tried all of these "home " recipes. None worked well enough . Now ,I get rid of the nest. Most effective.

I like your explanation better. It's funnier but the truth is Boric acid dries out the exoskeleton and cracks it thus killing them. They can sense it so they avoid it. That's why it makes a great border barrier.

Any powder does the same thing but not as well as the Boric Acid Powder you buy in the yellow package. Chlordane was and still is the best of all. But it's been banned becuase of the dioxins it leaves behind.

where did u buy that borac acid ?

I don't know where you are, but in Chiang Mai you can buy a 500gm tub for a few hundred baht from the chemical supply shop on Suthep Road directly opposite the hospital, so I guess these places exist in all major cities.

I second the boric acid solution, but if you are seeing dead ants the mix is too strong. The aim should be for them to eat it and take it home to feed to mummy! It takes abut three days to be ant free with a weaker solution, but it's an effect that lasts - just Google boric acid ant killer to see what others do.

My recipe, that works great in Thailand, is boric acid 6 heaped teaspoons, sugar one cup, warm water one cup - shake and serve in dribbles on the floor. Yummy, apparently!

I am basically ant free inside the house thanks to this stuff, but the big red ants that live outside and make their homes in tree leaf nests will not eat it. I don't want to wipe out the big red biting meanies completely, but I do get rather overrun with them in the garden and would like to "thin them out" a bit. Any ideas?

there back again so I resorted to NIPPON, This works also but I am worried about leaving chemical residue.

A few years ago I carried out some 'studies' on the ARS ant killer product. Basically the yellow coloured Japanese? manufactured granules worked great and the ants loved it. This was then superceded by a Thai produced brown coloured ARS granules that the ants totally ignored.

You can see photos of my findings in the following thread:

Hope this helps.

To thin out the red biting ants, identify the nest, or nests, in your trees. Look for a dense group of leaves that the ants have pulled together to form a shelter, something like a big ball. Usually, very easy to spot. When you know where they are, bring in a Thai friend or neighbor. They take the nests and recover the eggs from them and eat them. This will slow down the population some but the nest will be rebuilt in another nearby location in a jiffy. Just have someone come get the nests about every two or three months. They will appreciate the bonus delicacy.

Aswin Powder will not get rid of Termites. They are too intelligent for that. All that they will do is isolate the sick ones, and you need to get to the queen in order to kill the colony.

Boric Acid or Boron is on the Thai FDA's controlled substances list, so not easy to get hold of. If you do manage to get hold of Boric Acid, order "ant cafe's" from the internet. It makes the application safer for children and pets as well as no mess everywhere. I am a qualified sub-tropical Pest Tech.
