Trang never had an earth quake in its 50 year history

BANGKOK, 28 June 2011 (NNT)-National Disaster Warning Centre deputy director Rear Admiral Thavorn Charoendee said he was surprised that there was an earthquake in Trang province given that in the 50 year long history of the province no such thing had ever occurred.

A team from the Department of Mineral Resources has already been dispatched to study the epicenter. The quake was measured at between 2.6-3.5 magnitudes on the Richter scale and it occurred at close to midnight on 24 June 2011. Rear Admiral Thavorn said no fault line nor any evidence had indicated the likelihood of an earthquake in Trang.

There are altogether 13 fault lines in Thailand, two of which, including the Ranong and Khlong Marui lines, are the closet to Trang. The first fault line stretches from Ranong province all the way to Phang-Nga and ends in the Andaman Sea covering the length of 98 kilometers. The second one starts from Surat Thani to Phang-Nga and Phuket. The latter one has the length of 148 kilometers.

However, he said both fault lines should not have contributed to the tremor in Trang since both of them are not passing through the shaken province. The epicenter of the recent quake has initially been located in both Tambon Khuan Pring and Kantang districts or from the north of the province down to the south. The device used in locating the epicenter had previously registered a few variations which had then prompted another investigation as to where the epicenter might really be.

National Disaster Warning Centre Deputy Director has advised people staying the high rise buildings to find covers or stay under the table where there is an earthquake. He urged people to stay calm as they can think better in the emergency situation.
