PAD makes final plea in 'Vote No' campaign

Bt The Nation

The People's Alliance for Democracy yesterday organised its final march to raise awareness about the "Vote No" campaign before ending its 158-day rally at Bangkok's Makkhawan Bridge in the evening

PAD spokesman Panthep Pourpongpan announced the timetable to end the rally. Although the crowds would disperse at around 8pm, organisers would need five days to dismantle the rally stage.

In their last act, PAD leaders, including veteran Chamlong Srimuang, would urge voters to mark the "No" box on the ballot, Panthep said.

In justifying the casting of blank ballots, the PAD cited Article 89 of the Elections Act as the legal sanction for its act defiance.

The provision, which is part of the organic law enacted under the 2007 Constitution, has for the first time validated blank ballots instead of treating them as spoiled votes.

In drafting the provision on blank ballots, the then National Assembly chairman Meechai Ruchuphan said lawmakers should allow the counting of protest votes as a reflection of the voice of the people. According to the present election law, an uncontested candidate must get more than 20 per cent of votes cast and have more votes than the total of blank ballots to secure victory.

The PAD has vowed to push for political reforms by using the blank ballots as a reminder for politicians to heed the voice of the people.

It has also lashed out at politicians and political parties for trying to grab power instead of focusing on the country's problems.

The end of the PAD-led protest coincided with the final pre-election Democrat campaign rally at the nearby Royal Plaza, triggering concerns about crowd control. But organisers said the two sites were about a kilometre apart, and hence the chance for spill-over activities appeared remote.

That's a serious matter in my Thai family.

Granny (my wife) is Red....and she intends to vote for them.

Her youngest son just made the announcement to Granny that he intends to be a NO voter...because as he basically sees it all Thai politicians are c--p and liars, and he doesn't support any of them.

Granny didn't like that very much.

So at best they agreed to disagree...and don't talk about the election.

The election is therefore NOT a topic of casual conversation in my house.

Or, because they simply don't believe in the one-man-one-vote system, or democracy in general? You can get to either conclusion easily from what PAD has been saying.

Good news that the PAD's current rally will be ending, however I fear they would be back with renewed-support just as soon as PTP try to push through any amnesty for Thaksin, and that wouldn't be too long in coming, if they manage to put-together a PTP-led coalition. :(

Every vote no helps to bring back Thaksin. Must be exciting to be on the verge of becoming important again.

This time it will be different. The precedent was set with the shooting of the Redshirts in Bangkok. The army can use some of its tanks to squash the PAD anarchists. :whistling:

The tanks won't have any trouble squashing the PAD's barricades, seeing as they are not fuel soaked tyres and bamboo. If any, they are probably only the metal gates used to keep people out of the driveways, and could be knocked over by a scooter. The army shouldn't need to worry about getting shot at or blown up by grenades either.

The PAD seem to be setting a new precedent as well, by cleaning up after themselves. Hopefully, the red shirts will consider that the next time they say "but the yellow shirts ...".

PAD calls for dissolution of 5 parties

BANGKOK, 2 July 2011 (NNT) – The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) has petitioned the Election Commission (EC) for the disbandment of five political parties for their violation of the electoral law.

PAD core leader Praphan Khunmee submitted a letter with the EC and the political party registrar, asking them to consider dissolving a total of five political parties, namely Pheu Thai, Democrat, Bhumjaithai, Chart Thai Pattana and Chart Pattana Puea Pandin. He claimed that they had breached the electoral law, prohibiting persuasion of people to vote or not vote for certain parties by promising to benefit them financially.

Mr Praphan elaborated that many campaign policies of the aforementioned parties could be considered as handing out money to people. He cited as examples Pheu Thai's corporate income tax reduction, increase of village funds and pay raise for civil servants and state officials as well as the Democrat's diesel and LPG price retention, free medical services, free education and senior pension fund.

In addition, the PAD core leader pointed out that the Democrat Party's final major campaign at the Royal Plaza was also against the regulation of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) as the site was located within the palace compound. He thus urged the EC to look into the issue.

Vote Monkey!

F*** You ! Vote for the Dog or I come & smash all your windows in.

Wassup Dawg? Obviously your candidate brings out the viciousness in you! Is this the way you would like this country to be run? I must reiterate that the dog would not make up a good PM as his excitement would cause him to urinate a bit on stage. The tail wagging would be a sure give away when it came to negotiations as would the nut licking and the ass smelling. Again what if he was to have a meeting with Merkel and tried to sniff her crotch? Really big problem! Sure the Italian guy might be ok with it as he does similar things on a daily basis with under age prostitutes but hey, when in Rome. I also have forgotten to mention that the monkey has with him a secret weapon, no not the banana but the prehensile tail. It really shouldnt have to be spelled out for you but here it is MONKEY vote early and vote often!

Hmmm... some people in tin-foil hats still pushing the idea of a non-violent PAD. Yes, they weren't as violent as the 'men in black', but they didn't have to be. What makes you sure they wouldn't have been had it come to that? Regards barricades, Nick Nostitz recently pointed out that (like the red shirts at Rajaprasong) the PAD mined their barricades around government house with explosives.

What a sad day for Thailand. I believe this "vote" (give me 1000 baht please :)) will mark the beginning of the end (actually that started about ten years ago). The economy will suffer, corruption will get worse, crime will increase, Thailand's already faltering reputation in the world will plummet, freedom and democracy will take a hike, and "revenge" will be on the menu. Be prepared for major changes to the immigration system over the next four years (and not good ones).

We are talking about the clearing of their current protests.

Ah OK, but there was no serious attempt to clear them and it wasn't particularly disruptive. However, if they want to force out a govt they'll need to step it up massively. If PAD protest as they are now, then I don't think a PT govt will be worried and there won't be any reason for the military to intervene.

Ehh.. I usually agree 100% with you, but you seem to forget about one little detail, which is that the army does not take orders from elected government. Remember the airport fiasco?

First thing PTP has to do after getting elected is set up a (police) force who CAN deal with riots and civil unrest without killing dozens of people in the process. Tear gas and water cannons and all that.

Actually the precedent that was set is that the army will be slow to move on you even if you start firing RPGs at them. As long as you are actually peaceful, it seems precedent says no action will be taken against you at all.

So we could be in for a long haul. I think the PAD should shut down all sea ports and shipping into and out of the country. That should make a real impact. As long as everyone is being granted amnesty anyway and rule of law is being thrown to the wind, might as well go for the gold.
