Jasmarti Rice - Another Hoodwink

Featured Replies

I read with much interest about this GM/Hybrid version of Jasmine Khao Hom and Basmarti Rice.

One of the Multinationals have done the patent - as I was so disgusted with the way the patent was awarded, I forgot which multinational. Needless to say there is all sorts of innuendo about seeds being stolen from the seed bank etc.

But, rather than focus on that, I am more interested in why the patent was awarded.

After all one of the tennants of Patent law is the combination of two produsts must be greater than the sum of the two individuals.

Now the Outcome of the new "Jasmarti" rice, does not have any new feature, rather taking the advantages of both. The most classic example of this is a pencil with an eraser attached to the end.

If you ask me and from what I can learn all the Jasmarti rice represents is the culmination of two other products.

What do you think ?

yep. But if you have cash in the US you can do just about anything (even get away with murder - OJ). Look at the microsoft patent on variable mouse clicks .... outrageous.

They say that variable clicks, long, short, double, paired ... was their idea. Happily the patent aplication was thrown out in Europe, but money obviously talks louder in the US. The current patent system is stifling innovation.

I follow the development of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines, and so many patents have now been filed for every nuance of blade curve or scaling, that it is not possible to research and develop a VAWT without patnet infringement. Same happens in all corners of industry.

As for rice. It used to be good, to be a nourishing staple. Then the Westerners came along with high yield crops, which forced farmers into planting them (as the price came down with increased production). Now white rice is almost nutritionless. Thai's won't eat brown rice as they say it can't be digested - and that was true of the real Thai rice years ago. Now it is more like cardboard, and you can eat the whole thing.

Patently absurd is my view

I have googled quite a bit and it seems that jasmati rice is not a genetically modified organism but rather a strain of rice produced by breeding from an Italian variety....is this right?

As for patenting genes....seems strange to try to patent nature...so I'm inclined to be against patenting anything that is part of nature or evolves through natural process. Of course artificial genes would be another story but I'm against them being released in farms until their safety is proven to a high degree.

As with all GMOs, the results cannot be fully predicted.

Patented or not, it should be stated on the pacakging:

GMO GMO GMO

potentially dangerous for your health

That will be strange, as Basmati and Jasmine rice have a lot in common - Italian rice is very different from those two.

I googled again and found this link:

http://www.biothai.org/cgi-bin/content/rights/show.pl?0007

That contained this:

It said that RiceTec's ''jasmati'' is derived from a variety called Della, developed in the U.S. Della is a selection from Bertone rice, which is from the Piedmont area of Italy.
