Thaksin: No revenge; national reconciliation is priority

BANGKOK, July 3 - Fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra on Sunday pledged he would not seek revenge as the Thai people want to see a national reconciliation to push the country forward.

The deposed premier, who is now living in exile in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, was interviewed by media in Thailand shortly after exit polls showed the Pheu Thai Party probably winning over 300 out of 500 parliamentary seats.

Mr Thaksin's sister, Yingluck, is the top Pheu Thai party-list candidate and is tipped to become the first female prime minister of Thailand.

The ousted premier said he was delighted that such a large number of voters turned out to cast ballots, meaning that most Thais support a "flourishing democracy".

"I think that people want to see a national reconciliation and peace as the Pheu Thai party promoted national reconciliation policy to push the country forward and end the conflict."

Regarding the possible formation of a coalition government as the convicted ex-premier earlier said that Pheu Thai will not set up a single-party government, Mr Thaksin reiterated that coalition partners are in need, he said, but it depends on the decision of Ms Yingluck's party.

"I understand that she has already discussed it with them (the smaller parties)," the ousted premier said.

Mr Thaksin added he was not spiteful against anyone and that he forgives everyone.

He voiced assurances that his sister will be the next prime minister and that hard work is awaiting her, hard work in building national reconciliation and steering the economy to recovery.

Regarding his possible return to the kingdom after his sister's victory, Mr Thaksin was quoted by Britain's Reuters as saying "I really want to go back but I wait for the right moment and right situation."

"I want to see reconciliation, I don't want there to be any kind of the condition to not have reconciliation. I want to be part of the reconciliation not part of the problem," Mr Thaksin told reporters in Dubai. (MCOT online news)

Thaksin indeed has a history of unending lies and double standards. No way I believe him. I already see Abhsisit, Suthep and many others being arrested in the near future

What about his many proclamations that he was 'finished with politics'?

The guy cannot be trusted and I really worry about what's in store for Thailand in the coming days/weeks/years. I hope I'm wrong...

He has a rich track record of what it is politely called FALSEHOODS.

Mr 'I hate Farangs' Suthep being arrested - now that would make me smile! Just seeing that smug smile wiped of his face tomorrow will be a great sight!

Go Reds!

Based on the number of times Thaksin speaks about not seeking revenge ... it would seem revenge is on his mind quite a bit.

Ying-Luck is the one who one the election, but everyone is talking Thaksin, and so far, he's the one talking! So the part where he said he wasn't pulling the strings, seems like b.s. now. Let's count the ratio, Thaksin to Y.L. articles!!!!!

I too am very, very worried about what will happen in the near future. But I also pity Thailand, with the walking out of the WHC meetings, then asking for their help again the next day, now electing a family of proven crooks BACK into office, doesn't boost my confidence, and I'm sure a lot of other people watching from outside and inside are thinking the same....

I was just thinking the same thing. Thaksin this, Thaksin that.. bleh!

Can they just shut up about the exiled old guy in Dubai and focus on our new primeminister instead?

Perhaps it is attributable to the Thai media focusing on Mr. Thaksin and not the designate PM Yingluck?

Does this mean you will now live in fear, afraid that the secret police are going to come for you?

"Thaksin thinks. Pheu Thai does".

Doesn't that say enough?

Apart from reconciliation and all that, there's also this interesting thing called 'parliamentary immunity'. Something k. Jatuporn used with impunity, remember <_<

He said as much in posts earlier today, yes. "Be afraid", etc. He didn't say what we should be afraid of however, so good question.

None of this will impact foreigners directly of course, policies that affect foreigners have been very consistent over the years, regardless of government. The difference it makes to Thailand, the economy and Thai people may be a lot more profound. (Good or bad, I'll leave that to anyone's personal opinion)

If I was an outspoken Thai when it comes to criticizing Thaksin, I would be very concerned right now.

IMO this guy is hell bent on revenge at any cost. In recent memory I don't recall a month that has gone buy where Thaksin has not spoke of revenge. Clearly it is something that consumes his thoughts and likely has for a while now.

No, but there have already been several outrageous calls for revenge and retribution here on TVF...

that should be a hint to us all. No Thaksin won't take revenge... himself,

but as in the past he has others happy to do it for him.

Having been a victim of his vengeful nature in the past I can't see him mellowing.

You seem to forget something. Something very important.

When Thaksin speaks, it isn't always to you. The extent of the divide in Thailand is such that people like you instantly dismiss messages that aren't primarily aimed at you, but at very large, very angry masses who want payback and revenge.

Thaksin and Yingluck, in order to get reconcilliation started, first need to reign in some of the people in their own camp, and get them to buy into reconciliation.

I see Thaksin/Yingluck statements like this easily dismissed on the forum everywhere, implying: "Pah, this criminal, the only revenge he needs to worry about is against him!" This shows the extent of the political divide very well, where in fact Thaksin is trying his damnedest to get everyone in his camp to sign up to peace. And believe me, we want him to succeed in that.

Hmm. Well, I would be happy to assist any foreigner that hates the PTP and Thaksin, to leave. I have a carboard box to donate.

However, I suggest you step back and consider why some people are having a smilefest. For the past two years, the forums have been filled with hateful rhetoric. Everything and anyone associated with the PTP was evil. Anyone that had a contrary opinion to the Abhisit and PAD apologists was attacked in the forums. Look at the posts on PM designate Yingluck. They are filled with infantile puerile comments. PTP supporters were dismissed as ignorant, uneducated oafs. The posts often displayed an absolute contempt for the Thai population. The obsession for Thaksin blinded so many to the fact that the Thai population knew and understood the faults of Thaksin , but were not willing to trade him for the Democrats and military dictatorship. So yes, some people are looking at those that belittled and ridiculed them. Now that the tide has turned, perhaps some foreigners will be less condescending and dismissive. One need only look at the forums so far. Outright dismissal of the Thai electorate. It's time to let it go and try and present positive ideas and to help the Thais work together for the betterment of the nation. If people are unhappy, then they should go plant a tree or help out an orphanage or foster some starving kittens Anything, but complain and whine like a bunch of sulking spoilt brats.

Interesting notion if I believed Thaksin comments were in anyway directed at me or for my benefit. What you really seem to be conveniently forgetting is that Thaksin is the reason for the divide in Thailand. If he would simply remove himself from the equation then actual reconciliation can begin. Lets not also forget his (with the help of his little sister) responsible for the illegal protests and riots in BKK.

Funding support to the Red Shirts

Yingluck’s bank account was among 86 bank accounts that were accused of funding support for the Red Shirt protestors during their demonstrations in 2010. During this period of time, chaos occurred throughout the nation especially in the Bangkok Metropolitan area. Based on the investigation of the Department for Special Investigation, during 28 April 2009 – May 2010, around 317 million baht flowed through her account. 150 million baht was deposited while 166 million baht was withdrawn. On 28 April 2010 alone, 144 million baht was withdrawn.[15] Beginning 28 April 2010, the chaotic situation went from bad to worse. On 28 April, a fight occurred in Don Mueang District, Bangkok, and a soldier was killed. On 7–8 May, two policemen were killed during a riot in Saladang district, Bangkok. On 14 May, fights occurred in many parts of Bangkok which led to several deaths.[16]
