Thaksin says peace not possible without respecting people's voice

By The Nation

In an interview with Thai PBS television station yesterday, fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Thais voted for the Pheu Thai Party because they were fed up with the Democrats, and he warned that if any country did not respect the people's voice, it would have no peace.

What do you have to say with the exit polls showing Pheu Thai leading?

People are tired of being at a standstill. They want development and, most important, they love democracy and want the country to change in a peaceful way.

The motto "Thaksin thinks, Pheu Thai does" - what do you think?

The academics of the party and I teamed up to write our policies.

Knowing the unofficial election results, will Pheu Thai form a one-party government or fill it with decorative plants?

It is lonely to be alone. We all know each other but we have to look at the scores first. This is the issue the Pheu Thai Party and Yingluck [shinawatra] have to work on. But they have probably talked over the phone already.

Will you have any problem working with any particular party?

I am not vengeful of anyone. Working with other parties is what the executive board has to decide. I forgive everyone. Many who were spiteful to me may have forgiven me.

Do you still insist Yingluck is a PM candidate?

Of course. Pheu Thai announced clearly that Yingluck is the party's PM candidate. Yingluck has tough work ahead. First we have to bring about reconciliation and economic recovery.

Will you fly back to attend your daughter's wedding?

I actually wanted to return yesterday. But conditions must be right. If my return and [would make me] part of the problem, I will not rush back. It is my wish to attend my daughter's wedding.

I have to be patient and accept the situation if I cannot return. My daughter can come to visit me. I do not want to return if that will create problems.

What's the most important task of the next government?

It must bring about reconciliation, justice and happiness for the people.

Any amnesty plan in the making?

I have to ask the reconciliation panel led by Dr Kanit na Nakhon, which also searched for the truth on what happened and why it was such a mess.

Should a Pheu Thai-led government support the Kanit panel to continue its work?

Yes, Yingluck had earlier announced during the election rally, whoever has good ideas and brings about justice and does not politicise, every government must embrace such a person.

What are your thoughts today?

I'm happy for the people and hope the people's voice will be respected and democracy is embraced. In whichever country does not respect the people's judgement, there will be no peace.

Any regret about any fallout in the past over the three restive Southern provinces?

No. No one can do things 100 per cent correct or 100 per cent wrong.

Looking back, what was the big mistake you made?

I cannot reply to this in a short interview. Come and see me in Dubai.

My wife and I would like to say congradulations to the new Thai Government, but also warn Thais you may have opened Pandora's Box

In Australia we have a Female Prime Minister who won the election with Lie after lie and is sending our country down a roller coaster of destruction

If the new Government do what they said before the election and put the people first before her older brother, maybe Thailand can find peace

But if her election promises where just lies like the Australian Prime Minister, Thailand has sad days ahead

Yes,.. we criticise the Thai's for not being accountable for things and yet for decades now (or has it ever been different?) in Australia, one party after another makes and breaks election promise after election promise.

It seems OK to do that for governments and party leaders but you try doing that in the private sector and ASIC will shut you down and the CEO's will face retribution, financial disembowelment and even prison time.

It's not so much the "female PM" thing IMO, but that people get swept up in euphoria and false expectation and vote in parties that have in most cases deliberately lied or highly embellished facts in order to win favor and votes.

The entire poltical party concept and system is flawed. In fact it flies in the face of what works and in Australia's case it even defies aspects of the Australian Constitution but nobody has ever challenged that as they're all too busy milking the system and riding the gravy train,... and to do so would probably spell political suicide for the perpetrator and so nothing changes, but a spread of conscionable independents holding the balance of power is the only real answer and balance but we rarely see that ever coming to pass because it's simply easier and less of an accountability to step over to the "dark side".

Again... as I said in an earlier post,.."People get the governments they deserve" and just as Australia got Gillard, now Thailand gets Thaksin (again)!

Yet he has no respect for the law by hiding in exile....

Aye, tell that to the thousands you had summarily executed during your "war on drugs" Mr Taksin.

Was their voice heard in a court of law? No- you had them executed without trial.

And all those innocent civilians you killed in your barbaric crackdown in the southern provinces.

Did anyone hear their voices as they suffocated to death in those trucks you had them stuffed into?

And how about you Mr. Taksin? Why don't you practice what you preach and appeal your conviction rather than running like a coward?

You've already said Yingluck is your clone. Everyone knows that when she opens her mouth it's actually you doing the talking.

Good luck Thailand! You're going to need it!

The demands of the Thai people were actually pretty simple. They wanted an elected government. Is that wrong? Yes, I know that the farang political experts will insist that it was an elected government. Was it really?

Now I see our gloom and doom political prophets posting venomous, hateful totally non productive opinions.

I'll take the old tried and true track and say that if you don't like it here, leave!

The vote shows that although the poor upcountry bumpkins may be uneducated, they are not stupid. They know very well that if the democrats had their way, the countries poor would lose their right to vote.

Please explain what this means, where it comes from, etc

If you think this election was fair, you need to pull your head out!!! When they elected obama they wanted change, sure; they got it. Now the USA is in a death spiral and the same thing will happen here in Thailand. Only way for Thailand to succeed is to go back to the way it was run before, by the military. Coup is coming soon!

total agreement , they are all lying b*****s,only interested in linning their own pockets........... in a perfect world they should all resiegn and we should start afresh initially with respected members of the public, and most important in my opinion is that we should be tried in a court of law either by juries ALL the time ,or at least by our peers,... not by judges totally out of touch & with no idea how the masses live.............if we only had half the guts of the people rising up in the arab world at the moment ........... COME THE REVOLUTION !!!!!!!!!:o

I have to agree. We saw what happened here in Thailand. The parties the people voted in were thrown out and the voice of the people wasnot heard. The people in trying to make their voice heard were killed and called terrorists. The people finally got a chance to voice their opinion again and they talked volumes. The government that most Thais want is in power not some party picked by a few to work in their favor.

None of what happened in the last few years would have happened if special interest groups hadnot interfered in removing the government the people had chosen. But that is history lets hope a lesson was learnt from it. There would have been no blood on the streets of Bangkok if the peoples voice would have been listened to.

Maybe people would have listened to them if they weren't throwing so many grenades.

Obviously you think that the uneducated or not stupid? Since you seem to speaking for them your last statement proves the point Uneducated = stupid and by the way I don't like it one bit how this no experience brain dead bird is now this countries PM and I'm not going anywhere. I was here before the Thaskin farse which by the way Thaskin was way to wealthy to even run for PM but somehowwhistling.gif managed to slip by the courts and by making his drivers, children and maid some of the richest people in the Kingdom basically over night. I agree total rubbish

I think you and everyone is missing the point here. Thaskin changed the laws so that he could keep his billions from being taxed it is that simple. He nor any of you want to look at this mans personal quest for power and using the low IQ + propoganda to accomplish his ills. You think that Thaskin is sinnless and without stain? You need to watch the videos of who was burning and killing. It is all Bullsh8t and people like you just gobble it right up. Thaskin speaks Northeast does for 500 baht that is.
