Ex-Democrat Secretary General Not to Retake Post

The former Democrat secretary general says he will not return to the post.

At the same time, he is not worried if the Pheu Thai Party will take revenge against him.

Former Democrat secretary general Suthep Thaugsuban said, with Abhisit Vejjajiva's resignation from the post of Democrat Party leader, it automatically means the resignation of the party's executive board.

Abhisit resigned this morning to show his responsibility for the party's failure to win more seats in the poll.

There have been calls from within the party for both Abhisit and Suthep to take up the posts again, but Suthep said he preferred not to as there are other qualified individuals in the party who can become the new secretary general.

Suthep commented that the loss of the Democrat Party in the poll is due to how well-organized the red-shirt movement is in the North and the Northeast, which has paved the way for strong support for the Pheu Thai Party.

He added the party's new executive board will have to review why the election strategy failed.

Suthep also congratulated Pheu Thai party-list MP Yingluck Shinawatra on possibly becoming Thailand's first woman prime minister.

He hopes she will be able to stay in the post for a long time and not follow the footsteps of her brother Thaksin Shinawatra.

He reiterated the Democrat Party will not stir its supporters to come out against Pheu Thai but will work in the Opposition responsibly.

He also called on various pollsters to show responsibility for their inaccurate exit poll results, particularly for Bangkok which forecast a huge loss for the Democrats.

Suthep said he is willing to accept whatever consequences from the Pheu Thai Party regarding his involvement in the dispersal of the red-shirt protests last year.

He said he will enter the judicial process and will not flee the country.

He will also push forward with opposition against an amnesty and the return of the 46 billion baht of seized assets to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

He is confident Pheu Thai will carry out those actions when it has the opportunity.

Suthep Thaugsuban announced Monday that he would not seek another term as the Democrat Party secretary-general.

Suthep announced his resignation after outgoing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva resigned as the party leader.

Suthep said he would take responsibility for the Democrat's defeat together with Abhisit.

"I came with him so I must go with him," Suthep said.

To be honest I am sorry to see him go. He has kept me amused through all the time he was in office. Every time he was in the news I had to read about it. He made me laugh so much with his way of doing things and the statements he could make. It will be a long time before we see someone like him.

There is an irony in as he exits stage left, one of his predecessors in Sanan enters right as a major government player. Old "political fixers" don't die or fade away, they just exit and reenter the stage later.

Delighted to see him go - one of the most objectionable members of the ancien regime His "i don't like Farangs' comment would have caused him to be removed from office and probably prosecuted for racism in almost any other country in the world.
