Hi all, I will be getting married to a Thai lady early next year. I know I need to visit a British embassy to get an affidavit confirming who I am and I am eligible to get married etc and then that needs to be translated into Thai, my question is do I need to do this in the British embassy in bangkok or can I get it done when I visit the UK in the near future and then I assume I will have to get the translation done at the bangkok branch?

Any advice about getting married to a Thai as a UK national would be welcome, thanks.

Have a scratch around the Embassy website and complete the affirmation to marry, can only be done in Thailand. Go to the BKK Embassy, consular division, arrive just before opening time, take a ticket as you enter the office and you will be seen, checked, pay, and await the signature and stamp required, should take little more than an hour or so. Across the road there are translation services, cost for mine 350 baht. They also offer to provide a full service for you and speed up the process, this is your choice.

I declined their offer, and having the translated document and the original took a taxi to Laksi...if you are early enough in the day you can pay 800 baht and are fast tracked by a supervisor. You wait for your number to be called (mine was after an hour or so) then you pay and they will give you an approximate time you can collect. They were spot on with the timing estimation for mine, so you can quite comfortably go downstairs and spend a couple of hours people watching having a bite to eat, coffee, or Beer. Go back and pick up the docs job done. Next stop the Amphur.

Cost Embassy fee (from memory around 2800 baht) : 800 baht for Thai goverment certification of docs at Laksi (fast track) + taxi fares (1000 baht approx) + refeshments

I provide approximate costs that you may evaluate the offer you will probably receive from the translation company to provide a full service, but you can do the whole thing in a day without any hassle, and the government buildings are a spectacular sight in Laksi

i have just gone through this whole process. obtaining the affirmation, a new passport for the wife, id card, tb test, has all been very quick and efficient. (my wife needed to get more done as she will be applying for settlement ). you will need to get the affirmation done in Bangkok.

if you didnt want to go to the ministry of foreign affairs, then the translation offices - over the road from the embassy (ploenchit) can get the legalised affirmation for you. depends if you like queues or not.

here is a useful thread http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/233635-getting-marry-in-bangkok/
