Recently (a few months ago) stopped smoking and try to reduce sugar consumption as well as all the other stuff.

I can not find any sugar free Orange juice.

Im not good with languages so I can NOT read Thai, which makes it even more difficult to find it.

I see there are literally 100 different brands of orange juices being sold in the various stores.

Can anyone tell me the brand name of one sugar free real Orange Juice?

Normally the brand names are in English.

I have a feeling sugar is used in absolutely all consumable items here.

From what I understand all fruit juices are full of sugars? Fructose?

Tipco is a 100% juice. Not from concentrate. So I imagine that would mean with no sugar added?

However, you are better off drinking guava juice. Avoid orange and grapes if you want minimal sugar.

Or go for real fruit rather than the juice.

Or buy those freshly squeezed ones you get in stalls.

yeah, orange juice is high in fructose and plays hell with yer blood glucose if you're diabetic...try an imported grapefruit juice of which there are a few brands available at Foodland, Villa, etc., gives a lower BG reading...I prefer it as a mixer fer the vodka or straight with soda...

Yea! Amazing – what's wrong with the street stalls that have piles of orange peels and no empty sugar packets?

Thnx a lot, will look for Tipco.

And the stalls.

[All orange juice contains NATURAL sugar. So anything that does NOT contain sugar is anything but natural.

I think all sugar is natural.

Posted

Im not sure how to explain it, as my English is really limited here.

What I meant was Orange Juice with only natural sugar in it.

Not added more than already inside the Orange.

Im sorry if i didnt make myself more clearer.

you may also find some imported brands of natural juice

but much more expensive

besides Ive been told its best to drink the juice freshly squeezed. anything kept for much longer has not really retained its vitamins. (I could be wrong. Im just full of theories. in reality i have the most unhealthy diet of anyone i know :P )

Those street vendors almost always add sugar if the oranges aren't sweet enough according to their standards. People prefer sweet orange juice. Why wouldn't they?

buy from the ones u can see that make it fresh there

they tend to add salt, just ask them to do u a fresh one without the salt

they use syrup, usually in inverse proportion to the quality of the orange. many also add salt, though less so than a few years back.

that said, orange juice is one of my favourite things about thailand

Most don't have added sugar (no real need) but I can personally vouch for Florida Orange juice being no sugar added, it can be gotten at Villa's though not cheap... We buy Tipco though, it's very good juice with many choices, my personal favorite being the blood orange..

Malee or Tipco are both 100% juice. Anything that says 100% juice isn't going to have sugar added. Finding juice with no added sugar isn't hard, they usually even have it at 7-11. No added sugar in other drinks can be hard to find though, never seen a sugar free tea at 7-11

Sugar in Thai is น้ำตาล so if you can remember that you can look for it on the ingredient list and see what percent it is. All drinks will have an ingredient list with a percent for each ingredient. They don't hide whether or not there is sugar in it

Posted

The other alternative is to buy yourself a juicer , manual or electric, and make your own juices .

Wrong! Both TIPCO and MALEE long life juices have added sugar. The only way you know that there is no added sugar, is if it is printed on the packaging.

Some of MALEE's chilled juices have no sugar added. ALL of TIPCO's juices have sugar added.

The large DoiKham juices don't have added sugar.

How do you know they contain added sugar? When I look at the ingredient list in Thai there is no sugar there

http://www.tipco.net/consumer/english/product.asp?cid=13

"Tipco juice contains no preservatives, no flavorings, no colorings and no added sweeteners."

http://www.malee.co.th/eng/product_malee1.php?s_id=2&c_id=1

I don't have a carton of Tipco on me, but I have Malee right in front of me and it is 99.97% juice and 0.03% Vitamin C

Every drink I've seen will say on the ingredient list in Thai if there is sugar added and I don't see that anywhere on this juice. My carton of chocolate flavored milk product says right on the label, in Thai, 5.3% sugar. Same with my ice tea, only that's nearly 10% sugar.

Being Diabetic I have to look for No sugar.. also lean what sugar and No sugar looks like written in Thai.

As for 'Malee or Tipco are both 100% juice'........ They were, Malee still says No added sugar.. Tipco used to say it, but a few months back the prices went down a lot + not on promotion so again checked, Tipco now has added sugar, some stores have the sugar free but the price is 77 baht.. If you do not want added sugar = + 30 baht !!!

On Carrefour's last month in Thailand, they had a sale, big electric juicers 1/2 price. self made juice you are 100% sure what is in it.

Posted

I am also a diabetic.Even 2 liters of milk has 11 grams of sugar in it. Fresh orange juice drives my blood sugar up. It is really difficult to trust Thai labels as they put sugar in everything.

Posted

The other alternative is to buy yourself a juicer , manual or electric, and make your own juices .

Yes, this is the best option. A manual one will be very cheap to buy. And as a bonus you can peel the oranges before crushing the fruits. Thereby eliminating all the pesticides. :)

What I recall of tipco, malee and such, the trick is to choose the juices that are really 100% juice, rather than those made from 100% juice concentrate.

For instance their apple juice is from concentrate, while orange is juice. (tipco at least)

The word concentrate is ofcourse in smaller print just below the word juice :)

I only take Florida's Natural juice, the best I could find so far.

Don't forget that it'll not be really suitable for a low-carb diet though.

As a sidenote, I'd like to know if the orange juice sold in the street (you know, in the tiny plastic bottles and made of the small oranges) are actually sugarless. I feel they add syrup in it despite the "NO SUGAR" claim. Your thoughts?

'No added sweeteners' means.... 'no added sweeteners'. :) It does not mean 'no added sugar'. Two different products.

MALEE have changed the packaging of their long life products. They no longer claim 'no added sugar' Only the chilled products still make that claim. I'm not sure if any TIPCO brand products make that claim.

Fruit juices are allowed to have some sugar added without having to change the '100% juice' description.

Again, if it doesn't say 'no added sugar', it has added sugar.

Cool. How to do an a priori differentiation then? Is the no sugar claim deceiving?

Doi Kham Only the 750ml boxes.

They have a fair few 'no added sugar' products. Though they use Maltitol instead of Fructose in their 'no added sugar' fruit jam. Perhaps with the exception of their High Fruit content spread.

It doesn't say artificial sweetener, it just says sweetener. Doesn't that include sugar?

If you look at the Thai version of the Tipco page, it says "no added sugar" ไม่เติมน้ำตาล

http://www.tipco.net/consumer/thai/product.asp?cid=13

If it has sugar, I don't understand why they wouldn't have to list it in the ingredients when every other drink does

In Thailand "no added sugar" does not include corn syrup as a sugar.

According to the rules "no added sugar" may be written on a label while the product contains corn syrup.

All UHT Carton Thai fruit juices do contain corn syrup as a sweetener. (from reliable factory source)

Does this mean that the ones that have written 'no added sweeteners', have sugar added instead? :)

Now we have to look for 'no added sweeteners or sugar'.

If I don't have freshly squeezed at hand, I'll go for the chilled MALEE variety.
