Aung San Suu Kyi House Arrest

Featured Replies

The Burmese military's behaviour is remarkably similar to that of the Thai military if we go back in history - just like the Burmese military they did not believe Thais were ready for democracy.

While I do believe in democracy and feel very sorry for the peoples of Burma, just like cdnvic I dont think that sanctions against poor countries are a good idea, because they hit the poor and not the rich bastards in power.

To use sanctions as a means to provoke a revolution out of the suffering people is very cynical, bordering on criminal behaviour. If you really, really want to get rid of a regime, there should be better ways.

But in the case of Burma, many observers seem to agree Aung San Suu Kyi, despite her cosmopolitan air and soft-spoken intellectualism, would not have been such a great leader for Burma. Her popularity was seen as a reflection of her name and family, being the daughter of respected leader Aung San.

This is notwithstanding the junta's grave human rights abuses, forced labour and other measures.

My own best guess is that the place would break into a civil war if the military let go now. There seems to be too many ethnic groups with conflicting interests for a democracy to work smoothly from the start in such a situation.

U Thant was the best hope for Burma in recent times.

After he passed, hope for Burma to emerge from the juntas

has faded... :o

Perhaps the problem is the same in Iraq as it it in Burma. Due to the previous colonial period different populations with different allegiances got forced together and are now expected to form one gov't for all. Perhaps Burma should be split as well as Iraq....perhaps the US too!!
