I'll pick my own cabinet : Yingluck

Rejects Chuwit claim her brothers, sister are picking all new ministers

Pheu Thai prime ministerial candidate Yingluck Shinawatra reminded critics yesterday not to judge her leadership before the inauguration of her government.

"Instead of making colourful comments, just you wait and see my Cabinet first," she said, dismissing criticism that she was about to lead a "family" Cabinet.

Last week, opposition MP Chuwit Kamolvisit sounded the alarm that the allocation of Cabinet seats was being dominated by Yingluck's brother Thaksin, her other brother Payap and sister Yaowapha Wongsawat.

Yingluck countered that she was determined to line up ministers with the aim of forming a capable team to serve the people.

She said the filling of ministerial portfolios would be vetted and approved by the Pheu Thai executive board, denying the involvement of Thaksin and other relatives in the Shinawatra clan.

She urged critics to stop speculating on the Cabinet line-up, arguing she should have a chance to form and explain her government before being criticised.

"I will do my best to form the Cabinet because the people would wish to see an effective government," she said. In regard to Pheu Thai MPs travelling to meet Thaksin in Dubai, she said there was no link between the trip and the Cabinet line-up.

She insisted no one was pressuring her to award key positions to cronies and Thaksin did not try to influence the ministerial appointments.

Commenting on Thaksin's birthday party, she said she believed only his son and two daughters would see their father in Europe.

She said she would this week chair a party meeting and visit Nong Khai ahead of the revote on July 31, citing her tight schedule to explain why

she would not attend the birthday party.

Former electoral candidate Singchai Buachoom said Thaksin supporters would organise merit-making ceremonies in several provinces to mark the birthday tomorrow.

The ceremonies will take place in Nonthaburi, Chai Nat, Chiang Mai, Lampang, Nakhon Ratchasima, Roi Et, Khon Kaen, Phuket and Chon Buri.

Singchai said he and the organisers had no links with the red shirts.

Pheu Thai MP Apiwan Wiriyachai is scheduled to lead the event in Nonthaburi. Disbanded People Power Party's ex-leader Kan Thienkaew will chair the one in Lampang.

Democrat legal adviser Rames Rattanachaweng urged the red shirts, Pheu Thai Party and barred party executives, known as the

111 household group, to stop concerted efforts to pressure the Election Commission.

The same bullying tactics to

force the EC in seeking the disbanding of the Democrat Party are also being used to help Pheu Thai

MPs-elect escape disqualification, he said.

Notice how she said "wait and see" A common PTP tactic deflect, deffer and avoid the issue until all the pieces are in place.

isnt that just normal plain commonsense?? Imagine any business or for that matter military stratergy firing off before all preparation is completed. Yingluck so far is proving she is on track...albeit with a long rough road ahead.

Totally agree - except 3 weeks down the road we all know what will have happened. The cabinet will have been put in place, with Taksins mark all over it and PTP will deny any knowledge of ever having said Taksin would not be "advising" his younger sister. And all those phone calls between him and PTP MPs were personal calls.

I guess maybe "wait and see" = Taksin hasn't decided yet.

The only cabinet she is capable of picking might be the one fitted in the kitchen. Just not so long ago, it was said that she was "his" clone. I guess, this will be the next convenient excuse why she will pick everyone that "he approves". Please don't play us like fools!

Taksin thinks, Puea Thai does - now it's Taksin says, Yingluck executes! bah.gifbah.gifbah.gifbah.gif

personally can't stand all this Yingluk-bashing - she won the election get over it :)

I agree with that and it isnt as though the last cabinet was put together in a smooth manner. It is was full of unqualified people pushed in by overly powerful small parties who couldnt work together and the Dems managed to dagger each other in the back with leaks of corruption in early days to get factional advantage. It was all done in a truly horrible manner. Will the PTP cabinet formation be any worse or will it go smoother and involve less laughable unqualified choices?

Yes indeed, and is it cynical to expect more of the same? Not at all.

The poor lady has a sword of Damocles hanging over here head, actually several, but still she doesn't deserve a free pass to easy street, regardless of what votes may say. No politician deserves carte blanche to do as they wish.

Lets judge her cabinet when it is formed. If those selected are at least vaguely qualified for the post selected that will be an improvement on the last cabinet even if that isnt a very high bar. However, we may be pleasantly surprised as PTP may try to impress. The CTP choices could be the oddest with Sanan's son widely expected to get a seat just because he is Sanan's son although the suited for several positions Pradit may get a seat even though he failed to get elected. PC if they get tourism and sport have several well qualified possibilities. All in all we should get a cabinet better qualified all round than the last one and if lucky a lot better

I don't think people have a problem with Yingluck, its her brother that they have the problem with. A criminal dictating who should get the seats of power in government. Or do you agree with the principle that Taksin should have a hand in the direction of the country, It's no good saying 'get over it' because it's hard to get over something that is morally and ethically wrong and many people simply won't jump on the band wagon or buy into this just because PTP won the election.

(But, you are correct, the Dems were just as shoddy in their cabinet formation, but copying their pathetic performance is hardly praiseworthy is it? )

All the Yingluck bashing will stop when she puts dear brother in prison and shows he does not influence her decisions and she upholds the law as one of the cornerstones of her administration.

When you talk of the people having a problem with Thaksin, I would be interested in knowing what people you are reffering to considering basically everyone knows PTP is his party and a huge proportion of their voters would happily have him involved in anything. I am not saying it is right but just political reality. Thailand needs a good cabinet and actually whoever gives advice on its formation becomes irrelevant if it is good as far as I can see after all wasnt a banned poltico plus people involved in carrying out a coup heavily involved in the last cabinet formation, so it that doesnt seem to be a relevant standard.

Coups are also morally and ethically wrong, so surely anyone involved in those should face at least what Thaksin does? Certainly the main party that ignored and benefited from the coup has been roundly rejected by the people at the ballot box as have the small parties that also benefited from it.

Well she did say

"She insisted no one was pressuring her to award key positions to cronies and Thaksin did not try to influence the ministerial appointments"

What she did not say was that Thaksin had already given her the list to chose from.

No pressure just a list from the man who runs the party. You know the guy who told the party to put his sister in line for the PM job

One other thing why is she constantly having pictures taken showing her son with her?

I had always thought that world leaders for the most part tried to keep their young children out of the lime light.

Maybe he is going to be one of her cabinet ministers.:cheesy: Cheesy Ya I know.

I'd judge them 'the 52% of voters who didn't vote for PTP'.

Electoral laws are flawed in many places

and allow non majorities to actually take office.

I much prefer France's system.

Chirac Chiriac's RPR gets largest minority,

bizarrely Front National's far right of Jean Marie LePen gets 2nd,

and Socialist Jospin #3

Jospin sidelined from run off because there was no 50+x% winner,

run off is Chirac 80% LePen 20% showing a true will of the people between these two possibilities. No one believed Chirac Vs Jospin would have been anything but 60/40, but still a definite choice and message sent

No doubt FN got it's percentage and a few more of other right its parties, and RPR got all the rest who are middle to left.

So if Thailand EVER wants to have true representation chosen by the people; no questions, no second guessing, sure, then they should try this... of course the minor parties will scream blue murder and daylight rovbery if they tried it.

Of course, we believe you Yingluck Shinawatra... You and you alone will pick your own cabinet !!!

The only think Yingluck will be picking on her own is her nose!

Well let's see.

Sometimes people used as puppets for other masters have performed as expected. Other times they were good for a surprise. Too early to tell isn't' it.

Besides it's not like people didn't know exactly that Thaksin was behind the reds. Everybody knew that. While it's hard to say whether or not that's the reason people voted for PT, it's clear that it didn't stop them. The people knew who they were electing.

I think you misunderstand what I am saying. I have no love for either PTP or the Dems. (that's just comparing sh*t with cr*p)

As a matter of principle it is wrong to allow a criminal to become involved in the formation of the government. For me the government needs to uphold the ideals and principles which it seeks it citizens to have [and respect for the rule of law must be one of those principles]. If (as you suggest) they take advice from criminals on the basis of it being 'good advice' and therefore acceptable you are leading your own people down a very rocky road by setting a very bad example.

Do you think it is a principled, ethical and moral thing to do to take advice from a criminal? If you do think it is acceptable, then at what stage does it become unacceptable? How far down that road must you travel?

For me it seems a no brainer - It's a Yes / No answer.

Any government which throws aside the basic cultural and social values is morally corrupt from the start. Is that the role model we seek for our children?

Edit - Thailand needs a fresh start, but this fingering by taskin is picking at the scab of the past.

Thaksin thinks, Puea Thai acts + the clone = no original thought from her

Prove me wrong, Ms Yingluck.

If the Thai people get a cabinet comprised of people who are the very best suited for the positions in regard to wisdom, knowledge, experience in their particular field of endeavor, then I'll be impressed. Yet because such concepts are alien to Thai political maneuvering, I'll expect the same corrupt, tired, non original thinkers, followers of money & power as have always been appointed to power positions.

Why should you and others worry if Thaksin picks the whole cabinet. It was him that people were voting for. Ask those who voted for PT I dont think they mind whatever he does, he cannot do wrong, Just get used to it for the next 8 yrs minimum. Stock market is on the up, foreign investors like him back in control. If, as others have mentioned, that some of the worlds leadng players have been to meet or sent envoys to meet him you should get the message that Thailand now as a steady hand at the tiller.

A criminal. Found guilty whilst Thailand was under a military government. Not saying he was not guilty but only a fool can believe that he is the most corrupt man in this country. If your going to jail one jail them all. Thaksins arch enemy the 'invsible one' controls the courts (work out how that happens yourself) and if the courts dont get you the mighty 'invisible' will just coup you. I think Americas two statements about the outcome of the elections (one about down grading relations with Thailand, presumably if the amart intefered with the election result) is one reason why they have not taken control again. Cant wait till Thaksin reduces the military budget next year and reduces the size of the army by fazing out conscription. Its so funny thinking of the possibilities.

Hear hear.. It never ceases to amaze me how so many people can white-wash the actions of a military junta, just for the sake of some blind hatred of Mr. Thaksin.

Highly, HIGHLY peculiar.

And actually unfortunate, you'd think that 'educated Westerners' would value democracy and the votes of the people in their adopted country a little higher.

People talk about having the majority of the people behind her not so.

She received only 48% of the vote.

You might also figure that their is a lot of the people who voted for the PT but the reality was they were voting against the Dem"s Also every one knew that Thaksin was at the controls but not all of the ones who voted PT are happy with that fact.

She is not that solid yet. It will depend on her actions when she does take the reign's of power. Give her 6 months and then make judgements on her performance.

Yingluck is in now all we can do is sit back and hope that she has honorable intention and is lucky enough to find some honorable people to help her.

To really prove that she is looking to reconciliation she might consider a Dem in the cabinet.

Family is family the only way she can walk that tight wire is to leave Thaksin out of all her proposals and pretend like he has nothing to say in how she runs the government..
