re ... There will be festival with the Best Mother Award and fireworks at Tha Pae this evening, the event starts at 6:30 I believe.

no offence but if some of the older male members here dont fancy watching the best mother award

theres an international ( so it says ) thai boxing fight at kalare stadium in the night bazar which starts at 9 pm

and tomorrow night theres an art show in the shop next to the rooftop bar near thaphae gate

also tomorrow the new club licious are having a disco / rave / whatever ? ... at the shangrila

so theres lots of things to do this weekend : )

Also it's not really a 'non alcohol day'. Bars have been asked not to serve, but they're not being held at gunpoint today it seems.

Mothers day and Fathers day are an invention of the major department stores in Septic Tank Land. Simply to boost flagging sales.And to increase their PROFITS. They have NO relation to ANY celebration ,in the past. Only to increasing obscene profits of the Dept. stores. I cannot understand why any rational being has anything to do this quasi christian B/S..Knowing full well , it was invented by the Dept. Stores in america , to boost their profits.

They have NO relation to ANY celebration ,in the past. Only to increasing obscene profits of the Dept. stores. I'm famous for this. ****** Go and belittle your own miserable life. A holiday that celebrates the mother of a country and all mothers? **** There are a lot of the holidays that you might speak of but for this one you get a big negativo.

I guess we supposed to make our mother's feel special every day........but the truth is we (I) didn't, I took her for granted. There's nothing wrong with making mums feel special whenever it is and what harm does a special day do for mothers? OK so the stores get something - everyone wins. As I said earlier, if my mum were here today she would have so many flowers in her room, she wouldn't be able to move and I wouldn't begrudge one penny of what I spend to make today special.

I'm just sorry you feel that way, but I'm guessing you have reasons beyond what you have said.

Oh dear.

Instead of replying to the above, let me state that we did not visit any department store today, but we did bake some cookies for mum, and my daughter also made a card that said:

"Mum I love you very much and every day. I am happy and I love you each day of the year you are so sweet and you are so kind and I am so glad that you are mine."

(also in Thai).

You don't have to buy into either commercialism or official holidays to occasionally do something nice for MUM!

EDIT: I do have an update on the goings on downtown, but will wait and see if this topic is still open in the morning before committing the time to write something up.

I'll give updates tonight as to how many bars are open, and the number of peeps at Thapae gate. See if I can get thrown out of a bar again by police.

Also I have a feeling that many (if not all) of the Thai pubs/restos in Santitham will be open, with beer girls in full attendance.

WTK must still be sleeping one off, so I'll share my list of observations from last night.

-Interbar was fully open as normal with a band playing loudly.

-Spotlight was open.

-Many bars closed on the top end of Loi Kroh. Notable exceptions were Dragonfly and Carnival. They were "sorta" open. By sorta open, I mean reduced staff, music turned down, and/ or the door partially closed.

-The boxing area in Loi Kroh had many bars open. I would say about 90% were open and business as usual. Several bars stayed open LATER than usual and no police came around. One owner told me he planned to stay open until 6am, but later on decided to close about 3AM due to lack of customers.

-Was told that Number 1 bar was sorta open.

-Was told that Zoe In Yellow was also planning to stay open all night.

-Cafe Del Sol and the Rasta Bar were both open with fair amount of customers at 3/4 AM.

-Spicy was closed.

-Jackie Van was open with very few customers and it appeared that the police were there shutting it down.

-The bar a couple doors down from Spicy was full on open very late night, full of customers, with the music up loud.

As a side note, I also learned that the present Spicy is shutting down. They have a new location on Chang Moi road, a couple doors down from what would be the back of Mikes Burger. They are having a grand opening tonight. There are free drink tickets (to be used before midnight) advertising this event being circulated. I ended up with 5 free drink tickets, so I guess I better head down there tonight and take a look

Thanks for that update.. I'm still trying to get all the pubic hairs out of my ears. These things always happen when all you want to do is defy the ban and have some quiet drinks, and then you find yourself sexually assaulted by the womenfolk. It was getting so embarassing that I even bought one lady girl a Mother's Day drink.
