JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- The government of Indonesia announced that its Electronic Identity (E-ID) Card program would be completed in 197 districts/cities this year, local media reported Thursday.

Indonesian Interior Ministry's Population and Civil Record Director General Irman said the government's target is to provide E-ID Cards to 300 people each day in the selected region's in order to complete the project this year, Antara news agency reported.

According to Irman, in August, some 67 million people will be receiving their E-ID Cards, which could better prevent forging ID cards or residents from having multiple ID's.

In 2012, the government is planning to expand the E-ID Card project to 300 districts or cities. In Jakarta, the devices have already been set up, as they have been distributed in some 267 areas of the city, Irman said.

The ministry has allocated Rp 6.3 trillion ($743.4 million) from state budget to carry out the project, which includes everything behind the 2-minute procedure in which citizens process their signature and upgrade their personal record with a retina photo, finger prints, and a picture. The budget is also used for logistics such as cards, card readers, finger print scanners, cameras, signature pads, servers, and training for 40,000 operators.
