EU population increases to 502.5 million

BRUSSELS (BNO NEWS) -- The 27-nation European Union (EU) region registered a population of approximately 502.5 million in January, an increase of 1.4 million compared to the previous year.

According to the EU's statistical office, Eurostat, the region's +2.7 per 1000 inhabitants annual rate was due to a natural increase of 500,000 people (+1.0 percent) and net migration of 900,000 people (+1.7 percent).

Meanwhile, the population of the 17-country euro area was estimated at 332 million in January, compared with 330.9 million the previous year, marking an annual rate of +3.1 percent. The area had an natural increase of 300,000 (+1.0 percent) and a net migration of 700,000 (+2.1 percent).

The highest natural growth rates were registered in Ireland, Cyprus, France, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom. In 2010, 5.4 million children were born in the EU27. The crude birth rate was 10.7 per 1000 inhabitants, the same as in 2009.

The highest birth rates were recorded in Ireland (16.5 percent), the United Kingdom (13.0 percent), France (12.8 percent), Cyprus (12.4 percent) and Sweden (12.3 percent), and the lowest rates in Germany (8.3 percent), Latvia (8.6 percent), Hungary (9.0 percent), Italy (9.3 percent), Austria (9.4 percent), Portugal (9.5 percent) and Malta (9.6 percent).

According to Eurostat's report, there were 4.8 million deaths registered in the EU27 in 2010 with a crude death rate was 9.7 per 1000 inhabitants, unchanged compared with 2009.

In conclusion, the population increased in twenty Member States and decreased in seven, with considerable variations between Member States. The largest relative increases were observed in Luxembourg (+19.3 percent), Sweden (+8.0 percent), Malta (+7.8 percent), Belgium (+7.2 percent) and the United Kingdom (+6.6 percent), and the largest decreases in Lithuania (-25.7 percent), Latvia (-8.4 percent) and Bulgaria (-7.8 percent).

The report should also mention how indigenous animals and natural habitat are decreasing in that part of the world. Half a billion people in a relatively small area, whose economies are strapped from overspending for decades. Sounds like it's time for free distribution of birth control, and free 'tube tying' operations for any consenting adults.
