ABUJA (BNO NEWS) – At least 14 people were killed on Tuesday when a bus ran over a group of robbery victims who were forced to lie face down on a main road south of Nigeria's capital, local newspaper The Nation reported on Thursday.

According to the report, the victims were occupants of a luxury bus belonging to Chisco Transport Company which was traveling from either Lagos or Ibadan to Nigeria's capital, Abuja. It said the passengers were made to lie face down on the road by armed robbers who seized the bus and, as the vehicle was being searched by the burglars, a truck and another luxury bus ran over the victims.

The Nation reported that, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kogi State, the incident left 14 people killed - including a child. Six bodies were deposited at the Lokoja Specialist Hospital and the other eight were taken to the Federal Medical Center, also in the Kogi State capital.

Police spokesman Ajayi Okesanmi said policemen were combing the suspects' hideouts and said those responsible would be caught. He added that the driver of the bus which ran over the people had been taken into custody.

Nigeria has one of the highest crime rates in Africa and bus robberies are common on its inter-city roads.
