BTS extension line to Bearing station will be in service on Mother's Day

BANGKOK, 8 August 2011 (NNT)-Bangkok Deputy Governor Theerachon Manomaipibul has revealed that the BTS train will begin its first day of its extension line service from Onnut to Bearing stations on 12 August 2011 to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday Anniversary.

According to Mr. Theerachon, BMA Governor and a team of BMA executives will board the 1st sky train service between the said stations on the Mother’s Day at 5.15 hrs. The distance between the two stations is approximately 5.25 kilometers.

The extension line will be opened for service with no charge until 1 January 2012. The executives reportedly will discuss about the prices for the ticket going to Bearing station later on. The Deputy Governor added that the rail system is now 100% ready for a full operation.

As for the celebrations on Her Majesty the Queen’s 79th Birthday, the Deputy Governor said events would be held from 9-12 August at Sanam Luang, the Royal Plaza, Dusit Palace. Lan Khon Mueang and on Ratchadamnoen road. A religious ceremony will be taking place in the morning with 1,985 monks performing the sacred rituals. This is followed by the representatives from 5 religion institutions taking turns to express their wishes for Her Majesty the Queen.

However, there will be a candle-lit parade on the eve of Her Majesty’s Birthday starting from Misakawan intersection all the way through Ratchadamnoen Nok road and the Phanfa Lilat Bridge to the Democracy Monument and Sanam Luang.

I can't wait-let's hope the service is frequent during peak times.

I'm really afraid peak times are going to be terrible for the next year and a half.

As I understand ,they are already using all their carriages on Sukhumvit line during peak hours and it happens almost daily that I have to wait for a second train to manage to get in during peak hours.

I read somewhere they just ordered extra carriages so that each train will have 4 instead of 3... but it takes almost to years to complete the delivery.

I can't believe they didn't manage to look at the stats and figure out a few years ago that they'll need more capacity now, not in 2 years.

As I understand that have plenty of carriages left, from when they changed to the new chinese trains on the Silom Line. These are supposed to be used on the Sukhumvit Line, when the extension opens.

This long, existing thread has a lot of great detail and information.

Most expect published intervals (my vague recollection: 2:38 - 5:30, varies by time of day, and also Sat/Sun) to remain constant as some/all of the twelve 3-car trains from the Silom line will be added to the Sukhumvit line. So running say 30 sets would increase capacity by 33%, and perhaps maintain frequencies?

35 new cars have been ordered to increase all to 4-car sets, some due late this year.

The platforms, for the most part, can accommodate 6-car sets.

How will it work as a free service for the rest of this year? Won't the trains just continue from the existing Sukhumvit line? So you could board with a ticket at Chidlom, then get off for free after On-Nut? Or do you need to change at on-Nut?

You do realize that the BTS uses a sophisticated, computerized toll system, which keeps track of where one enters and exits via RFID cards? Until Dec. 31, 2011, if you exit at at any station beyond On Nut you will pay the same fare as if you had exited at On Nut.

Thanks ....

That will be a good deal for all the people living up Sukhumvit and may help to reduce the traffic congestion (a bit)? I guess the taxi guys will not be happy though.

I sure hope you're right.

My understanding came from the declaration below, which I understood, maybe incorrectly, as: "no increase of capacity before 2013"

Re: ''BTS' growing pains need attention'' (BP, Editorial, June 26). With respect, we would like to update the information on Bangkok Mass Transit Plc's skytrain. The operator has ordered an additional 35 rail cars from Siemens AG, extending the existing fleet of 35 sets of 3-car trains to 4-car trains, to support the increase in passenger demand on the Sukhumvit Line extension.

These new cars will be added to the current 35 3-car electric trains. As a result, BTSC will have a total fleet of 47 electrical trains, each with 4 cars, totalling 188 cars. The trains will serve passengers throughout the whole system, which will total 30.95km in length, consisting of the Sukhumvit Line from Mo Chit Station to Bearing Station (22.25km in length) and the Silom Line from National Stadium Station to Wongwian Yai Station (8.7km in length). These additional 35 carriages are expected to be delivered in 2013.

We also wish to correct the statement in the final paragraph of the article: the fact is that BTS stations have been designed to accommodate up to 6-car trains.
