I whistle. :whistling: I come from a long line of whistlers. Americans have always whistled. Not as much as in the past, but many still do. There are even numerous songs that are all whistling. There is an international whistling championship. So I guess Europeans whistle too?

I whistle while I work in the garden, or wait for a fish to take the bait. I whistle for my dogs and they come running. I've been known to whistle at an especially attractive woman. :giggle:

But Thai give me an odd look when I whistle absentmindedly. They are surprised when my dogs unfailingly come when I whistle. Thai girls do, however, usually appreciate a subtle whistle.

It occurred to me today, I've never heard a Thai whistle. Anybody heard one whistle?

While I don't whistle all that much, do now and then, especially in the car when a lively C&W tune pops up, that's when I get the strange looks from my wife, and others along for the ride.

Good Q, tho, standing by for more comments.

it's supposed to summon ghosts/spirits if done in the evening, apparently.

Really?

I must remember that, loads of fun to be had scaring the <deleted> out of people.

That mean all the dogs I've had over the last 50 years will also come-a-running?

hahahaha, that was good. :D

Well, when I want to get someone's attention faraway, I stick two fingers in my mouth and whistle.

However this for some reason it's not so popular in this country. The normal thing would be to clap ones hands to get the attention.

.

It is in many cultures. In parts of Lancashire it is considered unlucky to whistle after sundown.

On a second thought, it could come in handy when approached by scammers. :)

My wife tells me I shouldn't whistle while I'm taking a buck-ass-naked outdoor shower. Ahhhh, the advantages of living in the jungle.

Okay, let's make this a poll, so we can get to the botom of it.

Indeed ,Does or will the poll include categories for analysing Incorrect spelling, incorrect grammar, of which every post here is guilty . So that we can get to the bottom of it?My apologies , IF you are 2nd Language speakers, But I have a sneaking suspicion, you are mainly septic tanks .Am i right or wrong? Go, Go ,Go

I said "poll" not "troll"

If you can't play well with others, go play with yourself.

My comment was very much directed at you. What has this do to do with "play'"?. It has to do with your inability to be able to use correct English. Thai Visa has a "spell checker" which, uses American English .TURN IT ON. Use it,so you are not teaching bad English , to those who are NOT first Language speakers. Too difficult for you? Very sorry. Try to control your arrogance.

You know, we've been encouraged recently by some mods to report posts like yours, as they are intrusive to the thread topics and contrary to mature adults enjoying the forum. But me, I'd rather leave yours right where they are so others can see what an anti-social, antagonistic, miserable person of low self-esteem you really are.

Hard to imagine, a thread about happy whistling, and you bring hate and discontent as your offering.

Settle down peoples.

OP obviously has never had the pleasure of entering a Thai car parking facility. Plenty of whistling there.laugh.gif

Yes, and it's usually very frenetic whistling as I back out farang-style. (Especially if there weren't restrooms where I was shopping!)

Well, when I want to get someone's attention faraway, I stick two fingers in my mouth and whistle.

However this for some reason it's not so popular in this country. The normal thing would be to clap ones hands to get the attention.

Some years ago I once whistled musically (quite well I have to say), out in the countryside of Phrae province, one bright morning, killing time while awaiting the start of a sports event.

One of the very few people near me, a middle aged Thai woman, turned and gave me one of the dirtiest looks I've ever received. I needed a shower soon after.

I stopped whistling immediately, being a newbie. Now I have enough Thai (and enough gaul) to wander over and say politely "Do you always look like that at happy people?" or some such.

Re the handclap you mention, I once saw this used by a young Thai 'journalist' at a sophisticated international press conference. It was question time, and there was no need whatever to attract the speakers attention. Everyone looked daggers at him, but of course he showed no sign of contrition.

He was obviously one of the chosen few.

Shame there are so many of 'em, eh?

On the contrary; Thai's are experts in whistling dixie.

:whistling:

Ask a thai to whistle you will find that 95 percent cannot.. In my gf village none can whistle but its fun watching them try lol :whistling:

When I whistle to try and replicate the birdsongs I get amazed looks from Thais.

I think you're on to something, asked my partner why Thais don't whistle; answer:

Because they can't

She did not know of any association between whistling and ghosts.

Lots of Thais whistle. There is one at the weekly market here that whistles songs using his hands in his mouth to produce complete concerts. He has a cup there and people tip him. I don't whistle because my father was a whistler and it drove me nuts as a child.

The only Thai that I know who whistles is the owner of the local corner shop where I sit and have a beer. He does it all the time especially accompanying a tune on the radio. I do wish that he could whistle in tune though.
