Pattaya to charm with films

PATTAYA, 10 August 2011 – Pattaya has applied for Creative Culture City Network status from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

Pattaya Municipal Administration’s mayor, Ittipon Kunpleum, together with Ministry of Culture Contemporary Culture director, Prisana Pongthadsirikul, attended the signing ceremony late last week which will lead the way for Pattaya’s application into the Creative Culture City Network.

It hopes to gain designation as a City of Films, which is one of seven categories listed in the network.

According to Ms Prisana, the plan is to establish Pattaya as a centre for Thai film productions due to its convenient location 80 km southeast of the country’s aviation gateway Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Currently the resort is not a recognised film location, but it hopes to convince the creative city network that it can launch an initiative to build a film base that will turn the resort into Thailand’s ‘Pollywood’.

Other cities in the film category are Bradford in the UK and Sydney in Australia. Mumbai the Bollywood of Asia is not listed.

Chiang Mai has joined the network last February in a bid to claim the category of Crafts and Folk Arts. According to its original plan, Chiang Mai will submit an application later this year and the result will be known by early March 2012.

The Creative Culture Cities Network is a project under the patronage of UNESCO that aims to maintain and celebrate cultural diversity of alliance countries.

There are seven categories in the network: Literature; Film; Music; Craft and Folk Art; Design; Media Arts; and Gastronomy. Thailand has applied for membership in two fields Craft and Folk Art (Chiang Mai) and Film (Pattaya).
