Cat Fiber On Net Vs True Ultra High Speed

hey,

Since i heard Cat telecom owns all the international gateway in thailand then generally it must have good download speed on international websites, also cat has 20/2 package similar to true but for 2500

Since my house is far from the poll true cant seem to provide me with there ultra high speed internet. any of you guys have experience using cat on net FTTH compared to true?

Which is better in terms of a stable connection and good ping rates?

Actually, CAT is only 1 of the 7 or so Thai ISP international gateway owners. http://en.wikipedia....net_in_Thailand

You'll probably get a variety of opinions, but it seems most cross-feed leans toward True having the international gateway with the best bandwidth/speed to international sites (whether they have the most bandwidth or not).

This link provides a Thai ISP wiring diagram which shows the international gateways and bandwidth pipes out and into of Thailand.

CAT is clearly building out a FTTx network in some areas, like Pattaya, but it's challenging to find any current end-users after doing a quick search here and on some Thai forums. CAT's websites are typically less than informative.

Good info. The first two links seem to display an expanded/detailed view of CAT's capability. Wonder if the other Thai ISPs with national/international gateways have the same expanded wiring diagrams....if there are some I've never seen them. For the NECTEC maps 2010 above I thought about posting that link but when going to the site and trying to view/expand the two thumbsnails/diagrams on the site the thumbnails come up as broken links (at least for me). Cheers.

Hasnt cat build a new submarine cable which links half of the wotld or so. It is a good idea to try cat since not alot of users are using it in sukhumvit asok area. I have a friend whose in cat and he gets a ping of 205 to 210 ms to the states same server with true of mine gets about 253 ms

Nothing against CAT, but I seriously doubt that CAT or any Thai ISP has laid a long haul undersea/cross continent cable to the other side the world....you are talking BIG bucks to do that. Now CAT does own some short haul undersea cables that hook up to the backbone cables owned by others that actually run across the oceans/continents. That may help to reduce the number of hops if they are not allowing anyone else to lease some of that capacity...but leasing some of that capacity to others would make them money...I expect CAT both uses them and leases bandwidth to other Thai ISPs. The lower ping time may not have anything to do with who owns what lines, but how they are best utilized for routing and many other factors.

I'm on True Cable and just used the ADSLThailand speed test to their US server three times and got ping times of 218ms. 227ms, and 220ms. http://speedtest.adslthailand.com/ But that is still comparing apples to oranges not knowing how your friend is ran ping test, what server was being pinged in the U.S., time of day bandwidth issues, location in Thailand, etc. Unless you are a online game player, a few milliseconds in ping time differences between ISPs ain't going to be noticeable in day to day use of the internet.

I'm going to CAT telecom's Laksi headquarters today to have their platinum plus internet installed in my apartment at the State Tower in Sathorne. They quoted me 25,000 baht per month for 100mbps down / 25mbps up. Install should be within 2-3 weeks. I will let you know how the internet performs. For that kind of money, I will be furious if they decide to throttle my connection.

For this price, you should get Metro Ethernet to home / Leased line buddy. They have to give you Tier-1 service at this pricing range. You realize it is a lot of money for internet right? I hope you're not getting this just to watch online tv and torrents :)

Cool! Would be really interested how well that works. Yeah for that amount they better give you direct and high priority access to the underseas cable. CAT doesn't own the cable, BTW, they were just part of the consortium that built it.

3BB also has fiber now, starting at 1200 baht for 30/3 which is pretty incredible. But their prices go into the 5 figures pretty quick too if you want anything more.

Hey guys, just wanted to follow up with the initial results I have thus far with the internet connection. I paid a 10,000 baht "jurisdiction fee" to have the fiber ran to the 27th floor of the State Tower and into my room. Took them like a week but they got it done. The fiber is nothing like the fiber back in the US. It's not a single fiber but multiple fibers (up to 8 I think). I would really like to share photos of the install but can't seem to figure out how to upload them on this forum. Anyways, so without any trouble shooting or configuration, I have been able to get about 91 megabits down and 60-70 megabits up LOCALLY. This upload speed is excellent and I am told I am only getting part of the speed right now from them until they update their local node. Apparently I am the only one using that local node and as of now I have absolutely no contention with anyone in the local vicinity. I am also very close (500 meters or so) to the CAT Telecom tower and they may be helping in some way. I called everyone, 3BB, True, ToT, Loxinfo, ect----NONE of them where willing to run a dedicated line up to my apartment. I am not sure why CAT telecom decided to do it but I am sure as hell glad. I have not yet checked the international speeds but once I do I will let you all know. For your information, the way it is set up is as follows: Fiber Line - > Fiber splitter -> 1 of the 8 smaller fibers is then connected to fiber to Ethernet connector ---->Airport Extreme -----> 48 Port Netgear GS724TP Power over Ethernet Smart Switch ---->my custom built half a million baht PC running windows 8. Test was done on internet explorer.

Answered in the other thread you posted this in - but I suspect you need to read the contract you have - as it will clearly state within Thailand unless you have a special clause written in for international bandwidth.

Yeap, you can have a 10Mb, 20Mb,...100Mb...200Mb...etc...in-Thailand internet plan, but you international bandwidth/download speed is going to be much less....probably in the 2-6Mb ballpark using a Java-based speed tester which should give you an accurate result; using a Flash/OOKLA based speed testers like Speedtest.net are easily fooled download speed and ping time wise by in-country cache servers....Flash/OOKLA based speed tester can be fooled to the point where it looks like you are getting faster-than-light ping times and download speeds like the site you are testing to somewhere on planet Earth is just across the soi...and depending on your location the cache server might be across the soi.
