CAT blocks Dtac's 3G launch

Just as Total Access Communication (Dtac) schedules to launch its 3G service today, it received an order from CAT Telecom, the concession owner, to halt such launch.

CAT said in a letter to Dtac, saying that the company should wait for Attorney General's Office opinion whether the service launch complies with the concession.

Earlier, Dtac insisted that the launch is in line with the concession.

The service will allow faster data services to Dtac subscribers in Bangkok, without any extra charge.

CAT is in bed with true. True - CP, CO = Royalists. The new government should sack the directors of CAT and TOT first thing in the morning as they simply enrich themselves and have put Thailand below Cambodia and Laos in the telecom hierarchy. The CAT directors will soon leave for a country with a casino in order to get paid and claim proceeds from gambling later on.

The English language site for DTAC offers no explanation on how to get the 3G working but interestingly, if you use Google Chrome and visit the Thai language site and allow it to translate into English you get this:

AIS - they did a "nationwide" launch recently.........

Be interesting to see who offers the fastest service in areas where it is competetive. Nobody will want to lose out to a rival in BKK. It will also be interesting to see who provides the most extensive. In Chonburi there seem to be True and AIS 3G. Last time I was in the lower north it was all edge/gprs so anything would be an improvement. Here is to competition and a move away from bureaucratically manouvered monopolies

Maybe it's time for the "clone" to ask what to do to her Big Brother ?

CAT Telecom Plans Suit against DTAC

CAT Telecom is planning to file a lawsuit with the Administrative Court in response to the launch of DTAC's commercial launch of its 3G service.

DTAC launchs its third-generation broadband service today, allowing subscribers with unlimited internet package to use the 3G service immediately.

CAT Telecom CEO, Jirayuth Rungsritong, revealed DTAC was notified by CAT Telecom last week not to launch commercial 3G services under the concession from CAT Telecom.

Jirayuth said DTAC must suspend its 3G suervice until the company receives an official permission from CAT Telecom.

CAT Telcom threatened to take a legal action against DTAC if it failed to adhere to the concession agreement relating to the provision of 3G service on a co-branding basis.

Commenting on CAT Telcom's plan to allow TrueMove to buy its old telecommunication equipment with a concession to be expired in 2013, Jirayuth said the matter will be forwarded to the new ICT minister for his consideration.

Early today, DTAC launched its commercial 3G service in Bangkok via 240 3G tower stations.

The company is slated to spend 1.2 billion baht on the network upgrade for 3G service, including up to 1,220 base stations to cover 40 provinces in Thailand this year.

DTAC customers with unlimited internet package will be able to use 3G service immediately.

That compares with my 4 Mb/sec ADSL service (fastest available in this part of Bangkok) from TOT:

Up: 0.53 Mb/sec

Down: 1.20 Mb/sec

Ping: 65 ms

Why the different units, I'm not sure, but it certainly seems that the new DTAC service is blazing fast compared with the crappy ADSL around here.

Unfortunately no real competition is going to happen until the board of communications allows mobile phone number portability like in other countries where the customer actually owns his phone number and can transfer it from carrier to carrier.

That will really set the cat amongst the pigeons and i cant wait for that to happen and DTAC should be lobbying as hard as it can for that to shut CAT the F$% up.

Ummm... you CAN transfer your number now and have been able to for at least 4 months.

Up: 2898 kbps

Down: 3661 kbps

Ping: 105 ms

Don't have anywhere near those speeds with True3G, it's a shambles..

When True used CAT to attack DTAC, that was the final straw for me. I just switched my True number over to DTAC. You will have to fill out some forms at one of their main offices, but that was about it. I still have the same number, so there is number portability......Much cheaper rates, and when you call customer service some actually answers in excellent English. No wonder True is scare... :-)
