Southern Shores Hit Hard by Erosion

Natural resources and environment officials warn of coastal erosion in southern provinces.

Natural Resources and Environment Ministry officials reiterated that the coast of Satoon Province is prone to erosion by the Andaman Sea, particularly at three main risk areas.

The 3,000 meters of shoreline in Toong Bolang Sub-district of Toongwa is one of the worst hit areas.

More than 200 households have been affected, with some having had to evacuate from the area.

Paknam Sub-district of Langoo District have also been hit hard as hotels, resorts, and restaurants along the coastline are at risk of being eroded.

Bakan Village of Tanyong District, where 143 households are settled, is also facing harsh erosion.

Satoon Natural Resources and Environment Department Chief, Supassara Petchjamrat said the department has requested an emergency budget of 33 million baht from the Satoon Administration in order to tackle coastal erosion.

She added that each year at least five meters of shore is eaten away.

Coastal erosion is caused by fishing boats and changing sea conditions. Locals now live in fear, especially in the monsoon period.
