KANDAHAR (BNO NEWS) -- At least 20 people were killed on early Saturday morning when a bus rolled over in the southern region of Afghanistan, the provincial government said. Dozens more were injured.

A spokesperson for the Kandahar Media and Information Center said the accident happened in the Daman district of the province when the bus was on its way from the city of Kandahar to Kabul, the country's capital.

"The number of dead [has been] raised up to 20 from the bus rolling incident in Daman district which took place [during the] early morning hours today," the spokesperson said, adding that 26 people were injured. "This is the ever worst incident in recent months."

The spokesperson said the provincial government extends its condolences to the relatives of all the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery. Other details about the accident were not immediately available.

According to the most recent figures released by the General Directorate of Road Care, road accidents on highways in Afghanistan killed more than 1,800 people in 2007. Many accidents in the country are blamed on poor maintenance of roads and vehicles and dangerous driving.
