Putting My Farang Wife On My Retirement Visa

Featured Replies

I am curious about the proper process to have my wife move on to my "retirement visa". I know it is not really a retirement visa - but just for communication purposes . . .

She is also a foreigner, she is legally employed and has a work permit. She is 53.

We are curious about the transition when she quits to moving on to my retirement visa.

My understanding is that it is simple - bring in her passport, copy of our marriage certificate, etc.

What I am NOT SURE about is the part where her employer cancels her work permit. I am guessing there is a time frame within which we much get this done? Is it the same day? Before? Does she need to bring in anything from her employer?

Any possible hitches in the process? (of that I am sure - but any well known problems that come up?)

Thanks for any help.

It will depend on what status she is staying in Thailand now. Is it a one year extension of stay from Immigration (she would need to cancel extension same day as work ends [regardless of work permit return under current rules] and change or obtain a 7 day temp extension to allow time). If it is a 90 day visa entry it would be valid up until current permitted to stay date so not a rush (probably). You might want to check with the office involved that they can make the change OK as the normal procedure would be to exit country with copy of your extension of stay and marriage proof to obtain a non immigrant O visa for entry and then obtain the matching extension of stay.

She is currently on a non-Imm-B visa that was issued several years ago. She has been employed with the same employer all that time.

Does that change things at all? Will she need to leave the country or can she just switch over on her last day of work?

Thanks!

She is on extensions of stay which began with a non immigrant visa entry so she should be able to switch over but they are normally looking for a non immigrant O visa entry for dependents (although not required by regulations) so I would ask first if you want to be sure. At worst a quick exit with proof of marriage and your retirement extension of stay to obtain O visa for a new entry.
