I see that there is a B-B gun shop of sorts in CR on the wonderful map that is posted here. Does anyone know if they have those soft pellet guns? I need one that is on the lighter side of total destruction...I have declared war on the few remaining lizards that refuse to vacate my house. The main challenge is the tall ceilings we have. They scamper out of range in a heart beat and sit there laughing at me. While I am at it, has anyone seen big, heavy (okay...bigger and a wee bit heavier) rubber bands anywhere? I can make a dandy rubber band gun rifle, but need the bigger bands. I have tried with the small rubber bands, but those little ones that I can only find, absolutely do not work. We have screens on all the windows and two screen doors that stay shut all of the time, except of course when coming in. I really only want to stun the little critters and throw them outside. I do not really want to kill them, but if that is the only way to get rid of them inside my house, so be it. I don't think eradicating a few will endanger their numbers here. I am tired of their droppings. Any leads would be great. Thanks. PG

Seriously, Don't go down this route. Let them be. it'll become your own Afganistan.

Spend more time out of the House. try to come to terms with your Irrational fear of Chinchook Sh$t . :(

Holy moly....have I turned into Bush? I didn't realize I was being so, I don't know what. But I already have the entire village in fear and not only that but international bankers are waiting for this to escalate into something that might take us out of the global financial crisis we are in. Darn.....and here I thought I had the real answer to lizard poop and the recession. Oh well, back to the drawing board, eh? Jubby, you are so right....but it would be fun to tease them with rubber bands, don't you think? PG

How to Make a Rubber Band Gun

Rubber Band Rifle

1

Take your 60cm piece of wood and attach a clothespin 2 thirds of the way down .

2.

Cut a notch at the front of the gun.

3.

Slip a rubber band on the notch and stretch it down to the clothespin.

4.

Push down on the clothespin and slip the rubber band in.

5.

Aim, then push down on the clothespin to release the rubber band.

* At maximum tension, the rubber band should fire about 15 to 20 yards.

You might try Mae Sai market.

Facing Friendship Bridge, walk to the left side, down the hill to the last 2 shops before the riverside resto.

Just before it makes a bend and goes under the bridge to the right.

Those last 2 shops sell what you're looking for. B)

If you mean those green lizzard things, like Ghekos or whatever they're called, I think they're good even though they really scare me (irrationally) They eat insects so they're doing you a favour as if your home had no bugs, you'd have no Ghekos and the droppings are easier to clean up than the insects are to catch!

BB guns fire 6mm plastic ammo and aren't suitable for lizzard 'stunning' due to the rebound which can hurt of damage something if you're not careful. Although the expensive Japanese model guns are limited in velocity by law (under 300ft/second), the cheaper Chinese clones you buy in CM (brand names like CYMA which are Chinese copies of the Tokyo Marui brand) may have higher velocities. If you do hit a small lizzard with one (quite tricky) sadly you will injure or kill it, not stun, so you'll have more of a mess to pick up.

The best solution is to reduce bugs (and therefore Ghekos) in your home with regular cleaning of things like spider's webs, hanging fly paper and some sprays (sparingly as they are toxic).

For some reason, my biggest recurring nightmare stems from a memory of finding a large gheko, dead and grey, still stuck to a wall with it's head hanging back at a really unnatural angle. Phobias are funny things.

Never in a million years would I kill a gecko.

They do the best job on earth ridding my apt of mossies, flies and other pestilence.

But pigeons and macaws roosting on my balcony, leaving massive unpleasantness to clean up- another matter entirely....:redcard2::vampire::crazy:

These are not the Tok Tows or whatever they are called (the rather large ones), nor or they the geckos or the garden lizards, and we do not have an insect problem inside the house, as we have screens on all the windows and both doors. If that were the case, they would be very visible flying around our interior light fixtures. And no...I really do not want to kill them, I know how effective they are eating bugs and my very least favorite...mosquitoes. I have heard them called jing-jos and jaciims...the beige ones. We have a million outside (where I prefer they locate to). Okay, I will nix the soft pellet choice, as it is more expensive than what I want to spend. But if I can find me some decent sized rubber bands....look out. As of present, I have not found an adequate rubber band to use. I think, actually, I know they would only be stunned by those, as I have managed to hit one with the small bands after numerous tries (30-40) and it only stunned it....long enough to catch it and throw it outside. I have thought about glue boards, but that is just plain sadistic, and that, I am not. So rest assured, my only intention is to catch them and throw them outside. pg

Wow, you have flying lizards? I have seen some stuff in my time, some I think could even have been halucinations, but I have never seen flying lizards. Cool! I want some. Put them next to my birds. They would be like little mini-dragons, only without the fire breathing ability? ett

Tokays are the large ones - they make a lot of noise as well...

A couple of options for you on your rubber band quest:

1) Go to your local market and find a stall/shop that sells buckets, pots, brooms and other household items and buy a catapult (nang satick - หนังสติ๊ก in Thai). I'm not suggesting you use this to 'stun' the little geckos, as you will end up making a right mess; however you will find they use some decent rubber bands to make the catapult/slingshot which you can cut up and use elsewhere. I bought one for 20 baht, so it shouldn't be more than that I wouldn't have thought?

2) Buy some hair-bands from a chemist or supermarket and use them. My wife has got loads floating around the house, so you may find your other half does too? I'm pretty sure they would do the trick as well...

Alternatively, try and find a stationary shop - my local one in Phayao (they sell a lot of other stuff as well as paper and pens, but it is mainly stationary) sells larger rubber bands, so I can't see Chiang Rai being any different!? I have no idea where you would find one in Chiang Rai though? Perhaps someone else might know..?

  1. Find a long, light weight stick / pole.
  2. Attach a long rubber strip to the business end. (experiment & practice to get the appropriate length)
  3. Stretch the rubber band, extend the business end of you new weapon within a few cm of the enemy, steady your hand / aim ..
  4. With mouth closed *, release rubber band .. * watch out for falling jingjoks

My wife is scared of the tookays though we have a couple living somewhere outside the house.

I have seen one on the outside of my mossie screen at night stalking flying things and being very successful at it too.

We also have a few jing jocks around inside and apart from leaving their crap around they do a fair inside job on mossies and bugs too.

Basically I leave them alone and they leave me alone.

I used to make something similar in my younger days. The neighbours cats never seemed to appreciate my handiwork
